Verse 1

Moreover, brothers, I would not have you ignorant, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

And were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

And all drank the same spiritual drink: for they drank from that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

Do not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell.

Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

Do not tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by snakes.

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

Verse 10

Do not complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

Verse 11

Now all these things happened to them as examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Verse 12

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

Verse 13

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not let you be tempted beyond what you are able; but with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Verse 14

Therefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

Verse 16

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

Verse 17

For although we are many, we are one bread and one body: for we all partake of that one bread.

Consider Israel after the flesh: are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

Verse 19

What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything?

What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

Verse 20

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

Verse 21

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons: you cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons.

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

Verse 22

Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

Verse 23

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial: all things are lawful for me, but not all things build up.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Verse 24

Let no one seek his own good, but each one the good of others.

Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

Verse 25

Whatever is sold in the market, eat, asking no question for conscience' sake:

Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

Verse 26

For the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.

For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

Verse 27

If any of those who do not believe invite you to a meal, and you wish to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake.

If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

Verse 28

But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," do not eat it for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience' sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof:

But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

Verse 29

Conscience, I say, not your own, but of the other: for why should my liberty be judged by another man's conscience?

Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

Verse 30

If I partake with thanks, why am I denounced for what I give thanks for?

For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

Verse 31

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Verse 32

Give no offense, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

Verse 33

Just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
