Verse 1

And certain men who came down from Judea taught the brethren, and said, Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.

Verse 2

When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.

Verse 3

And being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles; and they brought great joy to all the brethren.

But there arose certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up and said to them, Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God made a choice among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.

Verse 8

And God, who knows the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as He did to us;

and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Now therefore why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

Then all the multitude kept silent, and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring what miracles and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles by them.

And after they had stopped speaking, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, listen to me:

Simeon has declared how God at first visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name.

That the rest of mankind might seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, says the Lord, who does all these things.

Verse 18

Known to God are all His works from the beginning of the world.

Verse 19

Therefore, my judgment is that we should not trouble those who from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

Verse 20

But that we write to them to abstain from the pollution of idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.

But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

Verse 21

For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day.

For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

Verse 22

Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also called Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren.

Verse 23

And they wrote letters by them in this way: The apostles, elders, and brethren, to the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia, greetings.

And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:

Verse 24

Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, You must be circumcised and keep the law—to whom we gave no such commandment—

Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

Verse 25

it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

Verse 26

men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also tell you the same things by mouth.

For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:

that you abstain from food offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.

That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.

When they had read it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.

And after they had stayed there for a time, they were sent back with greetings from the brethren to the apostles.

And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.

However, it pleased Silas to remain there.

Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

Verse 35

Paul and Barnabas also remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Verse 36

After some days, Paul said to Barnabas, Let us go back and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they are doing.

Verse 37

Now Barnabas determined to take with them John, who was called Mark.

But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.

But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. So Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus,

And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

but Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God.

And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
