Verse 1

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews:

And Paul, as was his custom, went in to them, and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the scriptures,

But the Jews who did not believe, moved with envy, took certain troublemakers from the marketplace, and gathered a mob, set all the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

Verse 6

And when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers to the rulers of the city, crying, These who have turned the world upside down have come here too;

And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

Verse 7

Jason has welcomed them: and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king—Jesus.

Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.

And when they had taken security from Jason and the others, they let them go.

And the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea: who, when they arrived, went into the synagogue of the Jews.

These were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

And immediately the brothers sent Paul away to go to the sea: but Silas and Timothy stayed there still.

And those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens: and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.

And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

Verse 16

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred within him, when he saw the city was fully given to idolatry.

Therefore he disputed in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.

Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and the Stoics, encountered him. And some said, What does this babbler want to say? Others said, He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods, because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.

Verse 19

And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is that you speak of?

And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

Verse 20

For you bring certain strange things to our ears: we want to know what these things mean.

For all the Athenians and foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else, but to tell or to hear some new thing.

Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ Hill and said, Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious.

For as I passed by and observed your objects of worship, I found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the one whom you worship without knowing—Him I proclaim to you.

Verse 24

God, who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Verse 25

Nor is He worshipped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things;

Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

Verse 26

And has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings;

And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

Verse 27

So that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might feel for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

Verse 28

For in Him we live, and move, and have our being; as also some of your own poets have said, For we are His offspring.

Verse 29

Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and man's design.

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

Verse 30

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Verse 31

Because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained; He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.

Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Verse 32

And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, We will hear you again on this matter.
