Verse 1

And when they had escaped, they learned that the island was called Malta.

And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.

Verse 2

And the native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because of the rain and the cold.

And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand.

Verse 4

And when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to each other, Certainly this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, justice does not allow to live.

And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

Verse 5

And he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.

And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

Verse 6

However, they expected that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead; but after they had looked a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

Verse 7

In the same region were estates of the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days.

In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

Verse 8

And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went to him, prayed, laid his hands on him, and healed him.

And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

Verse 9

So when this was done, others who had diseases on the island also came and were healed.

They also honored us in many ways, and when we departed, they provided us with such things as were necessary.

Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

Verse 11

After three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered at the island, whose figurehead was the Twin Brothers.

Verse 12

And landing at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.

From there we circled around and reached Rhegium. After one day the south wind blew, and the next day we came to Puteoli.

Verse 14

There we found brethren and were invited to stay with them seven days. And so we went toward Rome.

Verse 15

And from there, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as the Forum of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.

Verse 16

And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.

And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

Verse 17

After three days, Paul called the leaders of the Jews together. When they had come together, he said to them, Men and brethren, though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

Verse 18

When they had examined me, they wanted to release me, because there was no cause for putting me to death.

Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

Verse 19

But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything to accuse my nation of.

But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.

Verse 20

For this reason, therefore, I have called for you, to see you and speak with you, because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

Verse 21

And they said to him, We have neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren who came reported or spoken any evil of you.

And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

Verse 22

But we desire to hear from you what you think, for concerning this sect, we know that everywhere it is spoken against.

But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

Verse 23

And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, to whom he explained and testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning till evening.

And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

Verse 24

And some were persuaded by the things which were spoken, and some did not believe.

And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

Verse 25

And when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word, The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,

And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

Verse 26

saying, Go to this people and say, Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you will see, and not perceive.

Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

Verse 27

For the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn, so that I should heal them.

For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Verse 28

Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it.

Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

Verse 29

And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves.

And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

Verse 30

Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him,

And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,

Verse 31

preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him.
