His mother's name was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah. 3 He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, just as David his father had done. 4 He removed the high places, broke the images, cut down the groves, and broke into pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and he called it Nehushtan. 5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel, so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any before him. 6 For he clung to the LORD and did not depart from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD had commanded Moses. 7 The LORD was with him; he prospered wherever he went, and he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 8 He struck the Philistines, even to Gaza and its borders, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city. 9 In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it. 10 At the end of three years they captured it. So, in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11 The king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria and placed them in Halah and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 12 because they did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded, and neither would they listen to them nor do them. 13 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. 14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, I have done wrong; withdraw from me. Whatever you impose on me, I will bear. So the king of Assyria imposed upon Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15 Hezekiah gave him all the silver found in the house of the LORD and the treasuries of the king's house. 16 At that time Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria. 17 The king of Assyria sent Tartan, Rabsaris, and Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah with a great army against Jerusalem. They went up and came to Jerusalem, and when they had gone up, they stood by the aqueduct of the upper pool, which is on the highway to the fuller's field. 18 When they had called to the king, Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, went out to them. 19 Rabshakeh said to them, Say now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: What confidence is this in which you trust? 20 You say (but they are only vain words) I have counsel and strength for war. Now in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? 21 Now behold, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt, which if a man leans, will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 22 But if you say to me, We trust in the LORD our God, is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and Jerusalem, You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem? 23 Now therefore, please give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 24 How then will you repel one captain of the least of my master's servants and rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 25 Have I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. 26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to Rabshakeh, Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it, and do not speak with us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall. 27 But Rabshakeh said to them, Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men sitting on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you? 28 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in Hebrew and spoke, saying, Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 Thus says the king: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand. 30 Nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be handed over to the king of Assyria. 31 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria: Make peace with me and come out to me, and every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink from the water of his own cistern, 32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive oil and honey, that you may live and not die. Do not listen to Hezekiah when he persuades you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. 33 Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 35 Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand? 36 But the people kept silent and did not answer him a word, for the king's command was, Do not answer him. 37 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, went to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

As long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper. 6 And he went out and fought against the Philistines, breaking down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod, and built cities around Ashdod among the Philistines. 7 And God helped him against the Philistines, against the Arabians who lived in Gurbaal, and against the Meunites. 8 The Ammonites brought gifts to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, for he became exceedingly strong. 9 Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate, and at the angle of the wall, and fortified them. 10 He also built towers in the wilderness and dug many wells, for he had much livestock, both in the lowland and in the plains. He had farmers and vine dressers in the mountains and in Carmel, for he loved the soil. 11 Moreover, Uzziah had an army of fighting men who went out to war by divisions, according to the number listed by the hand of Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king's captains. 12 The total number of the chief officers over the mighty warriors was two thousand six hundred. 13 Under their command was an army of three hundred and seven thousand five hundred, who made war with mighty power to help the king against the enemy. 14 Uzziah prepared for the entire army shields, spears, helmets, coats of mail, bows, and stones for slinging. 15 He made engines in Jerusalem, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and on the corners, to shoot arrows and great stones. His fame spread far, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful. 16 But when he became strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction. He transgressed against the LORD his God by entering the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. 17 Azariah the priest went in after him, with eighty priests of the LORD who were valiant men. 18 They confronted King Uzziah and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have trespassed! This will not bring you honor from the LORD God." 19 Then Uzziah was angry, and he held a censer in his hand to burn incense. While he was angry with the priests, leprosy broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the LORD, beside the incense altar. 20 Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and he was leprous on his forehead. So they hurried him out of there. Indeed, he also hurried to leave, because the LORD had struck him. 21 King Uzziah was a leper until the day of his death. He lived in a separate house, being a leper, for he was cut off from the house of the LORD. Jotham his son was in charge of the palace, governing the people of the land. 22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, from first to last, were written by the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz. 23 So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in a field of burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, "He is a leper." And Jotham his son reigned in his place.
