Verse 1

After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Verse 2

Now there is in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, a pool, which in Hebrew is called Bethesda, having five porches.

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

Verse 3

In these lay a great multitude of invalid people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.

In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

Verse 4

For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred the water; whoever then first stepped in after the stirring of the water was made whole of whatever disease they had.

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

Verse 5

And a certain man was there who had an infirmity for thirty-eight years.

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

Verse 6

When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, He said to him, 'Do you want to be made whole?'

When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

Verse 7

The invalid man answered Him, 'Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.'

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

Verse 8

Jesus said to him, 'Rise, take up your bed, and walk.'

Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

Verse 9

And immediately the man was made whole, took up his bed, and walked. And on that day was the Sabbath.

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

Verse 10

The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, 'It is the Sabbath day; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.'

The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

Verse 11

He answered them, 'He who made me whole said to me,

He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
