Verse 1

My son, if you become surety for your friend, if you have shaken hands with a stranger,

My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

Verse 2

You are snared by the words of your mouth, you are taken by the words of your mouth.

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

Verse 3

Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, when you have come into the hand of your friend; go, humble yourself, and make sure your friend.

Verse 4

Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.

Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

Provides her food in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

How long will you sleep, O sluggard? when will you arise out of your sleep?

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

Verse 11

So shall your poverty come upon you like a traveler, and your need like an armed man.

So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

Verse 12

A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth.

A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.

Verse 13

He winks with his eyes, he speaks with his feet, he teaches with his fingers;

He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

Verse 14

Perversity is in his heart, he devises mischief continually; he sows discord.

Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.

Verse 15

Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.

Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

Verse 16

These six things the LORD hates: yes, seven are an abomination to him:

Verse 17

A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to mischief,

A false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.

Verse 20

My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not forsake the law of your mother:

Verse 21

Bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them around your neck.

Verse 22

When you go, it shall lead you; when you sleep, it shall keep you; and when you awake, it shall talk with you.

When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

Verse 23

For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

To keep you from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

Do not lust after her beauty in your heart; neither let her take you with her eyelids.

For by means of a harlot a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.

Can a man take fire into his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; whoever touches her shall not be innocent.

Verse 30

Men do not despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry;

Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

Verse 31

But if he is found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

But whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he who does it destroys his own soul.

But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

Verse 33

A wound and dishonor shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

For jealousy is a husband's fury: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

He will not regard any ransom; neither will he be content, though you give many gifts.
