    3Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had lamented over him and had buried him in Ramah, his hometown. In the meantime Saul had removed the mediums and magicians from the land.

    4The Philistines assembled; they came and camped at Shunem. Saul mustered all Israel and camped at Gilboa.

    5When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was absolutely terrified.

    12When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out loudly. The woman said to Saul,“Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!”

    13The king said to her,“Don’t be afraid! What have you seen?” The woman replied to Saul,“I have seen a divine spirit coming up from the ground!”

    14He said to her,“What about his appearance?” She said,“An old man is coming up! He is wrapped in a robe!”Then Saul realized it was Samuel, and he bowed his face toward the ground and kneeled down.

    15Samuel said to Saul,“Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul replied,“I am terribly troubled! The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me. He does not answer me anymore– not by the prophets nor by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what I should do.”

    24Now the woman had a well-fed calf at her home that she quickly slaughtered. Taking some flour, she kneaded it and baked bread without leaven.

    25She brought it to Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they arose and left that same night.

    23Samuel said to the cook,“Give me the portion of meat that I gave to you– the one I asked you to keep with you.”

    24So the cook picked up the leg and brought it and set it in front of Saul. Samuel said,“What was kept is now set before you! Eat, for it has been kept for you for this meeting time, from the time I said,‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

    25When they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof.

    12all the warriors went and recovered the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their remains under the oak tree in Jabesh and fasted for seven days.

    13So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD and did not obey the LORD’s instructions; he even tried to conjure up underworld spirits.

    10Just when he had finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel appeared on the scene. Saul went out to meet him and to greet him.

    11But Samuel said,“What have you done?” Saul replied,“When I saw that the army had started to abandon me and that you didn’t come at the appointed time and that the Philistines had assembled at Micmash,

    12I thought,‘Now the Philistines will come down on me at Gilgal and I have not sought the LORD’s favor.’ So I felt obligated to offer the burnt offering.”

  • 15So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the LORD’s house. But Samuel was afraid to tell Eli about the vision.

  • 35Then all the people came and encouraged David to eat food while it was still day. But David took an oath saying,“God will punish me severely if I taste bread or anything whatsoever before the sun sets!”

  • 12Then Samuel got up early to meet Saul the next morning. But Samuel was informed,“Saul has gone to Carmel where he is setting up a monument for himself.” Then Samuel left and went down to Gilgal.

  • 28Then someone from the army informed him,“Your father put the army under a strict oath saying,‘Cursed be the man who eats food today!’ That is why the army is tired.”

  • 7He took a pair of oxen and cut them up. Then he sent the pieces throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, who said,“Whoever does not go out after Saul and after Samuel should expect this to be done to his oxen!” Then the terror of the LORD fell on the people, and they went out as one army.

  • 10The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul and he prophesied within his house. Now David was playing the lyre as usual. There was a spear in Saul’s hand,

  • 15When Saul saw how very successful he was, he was afraid of him.

  • 2On the third day a man arrived from the camp of Saul with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. When he approached David, the man threw himself to the ground.
