So David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh Gilead and told them,“May you be blessed by the LORD because you have shown this kindness to your lord Saul by burying him.

    12all their warriors set out and traveled throughout the night. They took Saul’s corpse and the corpses of his sons from the city wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned them.

    13They took the bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh; then they fasted for seven days.

    16When David finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said,“Is that your voice, my son David?” Then Saul wept loudly.

    17He said to David,“You are more innocent than I, for you have treated me well, even though I have tried to harm you!

    18You have explained today how you have treated me well. The LORD delivered me into your hand, but you did not kill me.

  • 12So David issued orders to the soldiers and they put them to death. Then they cut off their hands and feet and hung them near the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it in the tomb of Abner in Hebron.

  • 3When all the leaders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD. They anointed David king over Israel, in keeping with the LORD’s message that came through Samuel.
