18then you must say,‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They have been sent as a gift to my lord Esau. In fact Jacob himself is behind us.’”
19He also gave these instructions to the second and third servants, as well as all those who were following the herds, saying,“You must say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.
20You must also say,‘In fact your servant Jacob is behind us.’” Jacob thought,“I will first appease him by sending a gift ahead of me. After that I will meet him. Perhaps he will accept me.”
8Esau then asked,“What did you intend by sending all these herds to meet me?” Jacob replied,“To find favor in your sight, my lord.”
27“Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the roadway. I will not turn aside to the right or the left.
28Sell me food for cash so that I can eat and sell me water to drink. Just allow me to go through on foot,
29just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the LORD our God is giving us.”
32Indeed, your servant pledged security for the boy with my father, saying,‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I will bear the blame before my father all my life.’
33“So now, please let your servant remain as my lord’s slave instead of the boy. As for the boy, let him go back with his brothers.
34For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I couldn’t bear to see my father’s pain.”
3He said,“My lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by and leave your servant.
4Instruct these people as follows:‘You are about to cross the border of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully.
3Jacob sent messengers on ahead to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the region of Edom.
4He commanded them,“This is what you must say to my lord Esau:‘This is what your servant Jacob says: I have been staying with Laban until now.
5I have oxen, donkeys, sheep, and male and female servants. I have sent this message to inform my lord, so that I may find favor in your sight.’”
17Please let us pass through your country. We will not pass through the fields or through the vineyards, nor will we drink water from any well. We will go by the King’s Highway; we will not turn to the right or the left until we have passed through your region.’”
18But Edom said to him,“You will not pass through me, or I will come out against you with the sword.”
19Then the Israelites said to him,“We will go along the highway, and if we or our cattle drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We will only pass through on our feet, without doing anything else.”
8So we turned away from our relatives the descendants of Esau, the inhabitants of Seir, turning from the route of the rift valley which comes up from Elat and Ezion Geber, and traveling the way of the wilderness of Moab.
29“You know how I have worked for you,” Jacob replied,“and how well your livestock have fared under my care.
5When Esau looked up and saw the women and the children, he asked,“Who are these people with you?” Jacob replied,“The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”
3But Jacob himself went on ahead of them, and he bowed toward the ground seven times as he approached his brother.
14And the LORD said,“My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15And Moses said to him,“If your presence does not go with us, do not take us up from here.
16For how will it be known then that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not by your going with us, so that we will be distinguished, I and your people, from all the people who are on the face of the earth?”
11Rescue me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, as well as the mothers with their children.
31Moses said,“Do not leave us, because you know places for us to camp in the wilderness, and you could be our guide.
56But he said to them,“Don’t detain me– the LORD has granted me success on my journey. Let me leave now so I may return to my master.”
12He prayed,“O LORD, God of my master Abraham, guide me today. Be faithful to my master Abraham.
27but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, to do battle in the LORD’s presence, just as my lord says.”
49Now, if you will show faithful love to my master, tell me. But if not, tell me as well, so that I may go on my way.”
10He said to them,“The LORD will need to be with you if I release you and your dependents! Watch out! Trouble is right in front of you!
8“If Esau attacks one camp,” he thought,“then the other camp will be able to escape.”
5The servant asked him,“What if the woman is not willing to come back with me to this land? Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
26Let me take my wives and my children whom I have acquired by working for you. Then I’ll depart, because you know how hard I’ve worked for you.”
5So he said to his servants,“You two stay here with the donkey while the boy and I go up there. We will worship and then return to you.”
27saying“Praised be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his faithful love for my master! The LORD has led me to the house of my master’s relatives!”
39But I said to my master,‘What if the woman does not want to go with me?’
40He answered,‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you. He will make your journey a success and you will find a wife for my son from among my relatives, from my father’s family.
