36“So today we are slaves! In the very land you gave to our ancestors to eat its fruit and to enjoy its good things– we are slaves!
37Its abundant produce goes to the kings you have placed over us due to our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they see fit, and we are in great distress!
2There were those who said,“With our sons and daughters, we are many. We must obtain grain in order to eat and stay alive.”
3There were others who said,“We are putting up our fields, our vineyards, and our houses as collateral in order to obtain grain during the famine.”
4Then there were those who said,“We have borrowed money to pay our taxes to the king on our fields and our vineyards.
5And now, though we share the same flesh and blood as our fellow countrymen, and our children are just like their children, still we have found it necessary to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have been subjected to slavery, while we are powerless to help, since our fields and vineyards now belong to other people.”
18Then Jeremiah spoke to the Rechabite community,“The LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel says,‘You have obeyed the orders of your ancestor Jonadab. You have followed all his instructions. You have done exactly as he commanded you.’
19So the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel says,‘Jonadab son of Rechab will never lack a male descendant to serve me.’”
2“Go to the Rechabite community. Invite them to come into one of the side rooms of the LORD’s temple and offer them some wine to drink.”
3So I went and got Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah the grandson of Habazziniah, his brothers, all his sons, and all the rest of the Rechabite community.
5‘Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.
6We have not paid attention to your servants the prophets, who spoke by your authority to our kings, our leaders, and our ancestors, and to all the inhabitants of the land as well.
13“You must not disobey the LORD your God by saying,‘We will not stay in this land.’
14You must not say,‘No, we will not stay. Instead we will go and live in the land of Egypt where we will not face war, or hear the enemy’s trumpet calls, or starve for lack of food.’
30“We will not give our daughters in marriage to the neighboring peoples, and we will not take their daughters in marriage for our sons.
17Instead we will do everything we vowed we would do. We will sacrifice and pour out drink offerings to the goddess called the Queen of Heaven just as we and our ancestors, our kings, and our leaders previously did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, were well-off, and had no troubles.
29Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD by turning back today from following after the LORD by building an altar for burnt offerings, sacrifices, and tokens of peace aside from the altar of the LORD our God located in front of his dwelling place!”
26So we decided to build this altar, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices,
18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has his inheritance.
15For we are resident foreigners and temporary settlers in your presence, like all our ancestors; our days are like a shadow on the earth, without security.
11Therefore, because you make the poor pay taxes on their crops and exact a grain tax from them, you will not live in the houses you built with chiseled stone, nor will you drink the wine from the fine vineyards you planted.
9We inquired of those elders, asking them,‘Who gave you the authority to rebuild this temple and to complete this structure?’
13I gave you a land in which you had not worked hard; you took up residence in cities you did not build and you are eating the produce of vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.’
9Although we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our servitude. He has extended kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, in that he has revived us to restore the temple of our God and to raise up its ruins and to give us a protective wall in Judah and Jerusalem.
3The Lord Will Punish Israel by Removing Its Kings Very soon they will say,“We have no king since we did not fear the LORD. But what can a king do for us anyway?”
5For I have not lived in a house from the time I brought Israel up from Egypt to the present day. I have lived in a tent that has been in various places.

39The Israelites and the Levites will bring the contribution of the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil to the storerooms where the utensils of the sanctuary are kept, and where the priests who minister stay, along with the gatekeepers and the singers. We will not neglect the temple of our God.”
9The LORD of Heaven’s Armies told me this:“Many houses will certainly become desolate, large, impressive houses will have no one living in them.
37We will also bring the first of our coarse meal, of our contributions, of the fruit of every tree, of new wine, and of olive oil to the priests at the storerooms of the temple of our God, along with a tenth of the produce of our land to the Levites, for the Levites are the ones who collect the tithes in all the cities where we work.
13These wineskins we filled were brand new, but look how they have ripped. Our clothes and sandals have worn out because it has been a very long journey.”
28For he has even sent a message to us here in Babylon. He wrote and told us,“You will be there a long time. Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce.”’”
20If you say,‘What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not sow and gather our produce?’
