14So they cried out to the LORD,“Oh, please, LORD, don’t let us die on account of this man! Don’t hold us guilty of shedding innocent blood. After all, you, LORD, have done just as you pleased.”
15So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped raging.
16The men feared the LORD greatly, and earnestly vowed to offer lavish sacrifices to the LORD.

1¶ Jonah Tries to Run from the Lord The LORD’s message came to Jonah son of Amittai,
2“Go immediately to Nineveh, that large capital city, and announce judgment against its people because their wickedness has come to my attention.”
3Instead, Jonah immediately headed off to Tarshish to escape from the commission of the LORD. He traveled to Joppa and found a merchant ship heading to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard it to go with them to Tarshish far away from the LORD.
4But the LORD hurled a powerful wind on the sea. Such a violent tempest arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break up!
24And a great storm developed on the sea so that the waves began to swamp the boat. But he was asleep.
25So they came and woke him up saying,“Lord, save us! We are about to die!”
26But he said to them,“Why are you cowardly, you people of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was dead calm.
37Now a great windstorm developed and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was nearly swamped.
38But he was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him up and said to him,“Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to die?”

24They came and woke him, saying,“Master, Master, we are about to die!” So he got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they died down, and it was calm.
29Because they were afraid that we would run aground on the rocky coast, they threw out four anchors from the stern and wished for day to appear.
30Then when the sailors tried to escape from the ship and were lowering the ship’s boat into the sea, pretending that they were going to put out anchors from the bow,
17After the crew had hoisted it aboard, they used supports to undergird the ship. Fearing they would run aground on the Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor, thus letting themselves be driven along.
18The next day, because we were violently battered by the storm, they began throwing the cargo overboard,

8When the sun began to shine, God sent a hot east wind. So the sun beat down on Jonah’s head, and he grew faint. So he despaired of life, and said,“I would rather die than live!”

2He prayed to the LORD and said,“Oh, LORD, this is just what I thought would happen when I was in my own country. This is what I tried to prevent by attempting to escape to Tarshish!– because I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in mercy, and one who relents concerning threatened judgment.
38When they had eaten enough to be satisfied, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.

40So they slipped the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the linkage that bound the steering oars together. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and steered toward the beach.
41But they encountered a patch of crosscurrents and ran the ship aground; the bow stuck fast and could not be moved, but the stern was being broken up by the force of the waves.

7So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they were about to sink.
