1Seven Woes Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,
2“The experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.
3Therefore pay attention to what they tell you and do it. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they teach.
4They tie up heavy loads, hard to carry, and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing even to lift a finger to move them.
5They do all their deeds to be seen by people, for they make their phylacteries wide and their tassels long.
7and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces, and to have people call them‘Rabbi.’
3do you pay attention to the one who is finely dressed and say,“You sit here in a good place,” and to the poor person,“You stand over there,” or“Sit on the floor”?
4If so, have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil motives?
7On Seeking Seats of Honor Then when Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. He said to them,
8“When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host.
9So the host who invited both of you will come and say to you,‘Give this man your place.’ Then, ashamed, you will begin to move to the least important place.
10But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your host approaches he will say to you,‘Friend, move up here to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you.
11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
12He said also to the man who had invited him,“When you host a dinner or a banquet, don’t invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid.
43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

15But Jesus said to them,“You are the ones who justify yourselves in men’s eyes, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly prized among men is utterly detestable in God’s sight.
5Private Prayer“Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward!
1Pure-hearted Giving“Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.
2Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward!
25“Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside may become clean too!
12And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13“But woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You keep locking people out of the kingdom of heaven! For you neither enter nor permit those trying to enter to go in.
7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,
8‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me,
9and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
