    1Oppression and Confrontation The Israelites did evil in the LORD’s sight, so the LORD turned them over to Midian for seven years.

    2The Midianites overwhelmed Israel. Because of Midian the Israelites made shelters for themselves in the hills, as well as caves and strongholds.

    3Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people from the east would attack them.

    4They invaded the land and devoured its crops all the way to Gaza. They left nothing for the Israelites to eat, and they took away the sheep, oxen, and donkeys.

    5When they invaded with their cattle and tents, they were as thick as locusts. Neither they nor their camels could be counted. They came to devour the land.

  • 17Instead you must utterly annihilate them– the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites– just as the LORD your God has commanded you,

  • 8They ruthlessly oppressed the Israelites that eighteenth year– that is, all the Israelites living east of the Jordan in Amorite country in Gilead.

  • 2and he delivers them over to you and you attack them, you must utterly annihilate them. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy!

  • 20for the LORD determined to make them obstinate so they would attack Israel. He wanted Israel to annihilate them without mercy, as he had instructed Moses.

  • 5The LORD will deliver them over to you and you will do to them according to the whole commandment I have given you.

  • 19and that you may drive out all your enemies just as the LORD said.

  • 27and he said to them,“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, has said‘Each man fasten his sword on his side, and go back and forth from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and each one kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’”

  • 31when the anger of God flared up against them. He killed some of the strongest of them; he brought the young men of Israel to their knees.

  • 19You will defeat every fortified city and every important city. You must chop down every productive tree, stop up all the springs, and cover all the cultivated land with stones.”
