Det var en mann i Cæsarea som hette Kornelius, en høvedsmann av den italienske vakt.

There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

Han var en gudfryktig mann som fryktet Gud med hele sitt hus, ga mange almisser til folket og ba alltid til Gud.

A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

Han hadde i et syn klart sett omkring den niende time på dagen en Guds engel som kom inn til ham og sa til ham: Kornelius.

He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

Og da han så på ham, ble han redd og sa: Hva er det, Herre? Og engelen sa til ham: Dine bønner og dine almisser er blitt husket for Guds åsyn.

And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

Og nå, send menn til Joppe og hent en som heter Simon, tilnavn Peter.

And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

Han bor hos en Simon, en garver, hvis hus ligger ved havet. Han skal fortelle deg hva du bør gjøre.

He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

Og da engelen som talte med Kornelius hadde gått, kalte han to av sine tjenere og en from soldat fra dem som var hos ham hele tiden.

And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;

Og da han hadde forklart alt for dem, sendte han dem til Joppe.

And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

Dagen etter, mens de var på vei og nærmet seg byen, gikk Peter opp på taket for å be omkring den sjette time.

On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

Og han ble veldig sulten og ønsket å spise. Men mens de gjorde i stand maten, kom han i ekstatisk tilstand,

And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

og han så himmelen åpnet, og et kar kom ned til ham, liksom et stort laken som var bundet i de fire hjørnene og senket ned til jorden.

And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

I det var det alle slags firbente dyr på jorden, ville dyr, krypdyr og fugler i luften.

Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

Og en stemme kom til ham: Reis deg, Peter, slakt og spis!

And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

Men Peter sa: Nei, Herre; for jeg har aldri spist noe som er vanhellig eller urent.

But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

Og stemmen talte til ham igjen for andre gang: Det Gud har renset, skal ikke du kalle urent.

And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Dette skjedde tre ganger: og karet ble tatt opp igjen til himmelen.

This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

Mens Peter undret seg over hva synet kunne bety, se, da hadde mennene som Kornelius hadde sendt, spurt etter Simons hus og sto ved porten.

Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,

Og de ropte på folk og spurte om Simon med tilnavnet Peter bodde der.

And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.

Mens Peter tenkte på synet, sa Ånden til ham: Se, tre menn leter etter deg.

While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

Reis deg derfor, gå ned og bli med dem uten å tvile, for jeg har sendt dem.

Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

Så gikk Peter ned til mennene som var sendt til ham fra Kornelius og sa: Se, jeg er den dere søker; hva er årsaken til at dere er kommet?

Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?

Og de sa: Kornelius, en rettferdig mann som frykter Gud og er av godt omdømme blant hele jødenes folk, ble advart av en hellig engel om å hente deg til sitt hus for å høre dine ord.

And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

Så ba han dem inn og lot dem overnatte. Dagen etter dro Peter med dem, og noen brødre fra Joppe fulgte med.

Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa companied him.

Og dagen etter kom de inn i Cæsarea. Og Kornelius ventet på dem, og hadde kalt sammen sine slektninger og nære venner.

And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

Da Peter kom inn, møtte Kornelius ham og falt ned for hans føtter og tilbad ham.

And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

Men Peter løftet ham opp og sa: Stå opp; jeg er selv også et menneske.

But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

Og mens han snakket med ham, gikk han inn og fant mange samlet.

And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.

Og han sa til dem: Dere vet at det er ulovlig for en jøde å omgås eller nærme seg en fra et annet folk; men Gud har vist meg at jeg ikke skal kalle noen vanhellig eller uren.

And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

Derfor kom jeg uten å innvende noe da jeg ble hentet: Så jeg spør hvorfor dere har sendt bud etter meg?

Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

Og Kornelius sa: Fire dager siden fastet jeg inntil denne timen; og ved den niende time ba jeg i mitt hus, og se, en mann sto foran meg i lysende klær.

And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

Og sa: Kornelius, din bønn er blitt hørt, og dine almisser er husket i Guds nærvær.

And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

Send derfor til Joppe og hent Simon, som kalles Peter; han er gjest i huset til Simon, en garver ved havet. Når han kommer, skal han tale til deg.

Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.

Derfor sendte jeg straks bud etter deg; og du har gjort vel i å komme. Nå er vi alle her for Guds åsyn, for å høre alt det som er befalt deg av Gud.

Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

Da åpnet Peter sin munn og sa: Jeg forstår i sannhet at Gud ikke gjør forskjell på folk.

Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Men i hvert folk er den som frykter ham og gjør rettferdighet, akseptert av ham.

But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is cepted with him.

Ordet som Gud sendte til Israels barn, ved å forkynne fred ved Jesus Kristus; han er alles Herre.

The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, prehing pee by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

Det ordet dere vet, som ble utbredt over hele Judea og begynte i Galilea etter dåpen som Johannes forkynte.

That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John prehed;

Hvordan Gud salvet Jesus fra Nasaret med Den Hellige Ånd og med kraft: han gikk omkring og gjorde godt og helbredet alle dem som var undertrykt av djevelen, for Gud var med ham.

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Og vi er vitner om alt han gjorde både i jødenes land og i Jerusalem; han som de drepte ved å henge ham på et tre.

And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

Ham reiste Gud opp på den tredje dagen, og viste ham åpenlyst,

Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;

ikke for hele folket, men for vitner som var forut utvalgt av Gud, vi som spiste og drakk med ham etter at han stod opp fra de døde.

Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

Og han befalte oss å forkynne for folket og å vitne om at han er den som Gud har innsatt til dommer over levende og døde.

And he commanded us to preh unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

Om ham gir alle profetene vitnesbyrd om at hver den som tror på ham skal få syndenes forlatelse ved hans navn.

To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

Mens Peter fortsatt talte disse ordene, falt Den Hellige Ånd over alle som hørte ordet.

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

Og de av omskjærelsen som trodde ble forundret, alle som hadde kommet med Peter, fordi Den Hellige Ånds gave også ble utøst over hedningene.

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For de hørte dem tale med tunger og opphøye Gud. Da svarte Peter:

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Kan noen nekte dem vannet, så de ikke skulle bli døpt som har mottatt Den Hellige Ånd like som vi?

Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Og han befalte dem å bli døpt i Herrens navn. Da ba de ham om å bli der noen dager.

And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
