Jesus dro derfra og kom til områdene av Judea og området bortenfor Jordan. Folk samlet seg igjen rundt ham, og han underviste dem slik han pleide.

Then Jesus left that place, went into the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Crowds gathered around him again, and as was his custom, he began teaching them once more.

Noen fariseere kom og spurte ham for å teste ham: «Er det tillatt for en mann å skille seg fra sin kone?»

Some Pharisees approached him to test him, asking, 'Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?'

Han svarte dem: «Hva har Moses befalt dere?»

Jesus answered them, 'What did Moses command you?'

De sa: «Moses tillot å skrive et skilsmissebrev og skille seg fra henne.»

They replied, 'Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.'

Jesus svarte dem: «På grunn av deres harde hjerter skrev han dette budet til dere.

Jesus said to them, 'He wrote this commandment for you because of the hardness of your hearts.'

Men fra begynnelsen av skapelsen skapte Gud dem som mann og kvinne.

'But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.'

Derfor skal en mann forlate sin far og mor og holde seg til sin kone,

'For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,'

og de to skal bli ett kjød. Derfor er de ikke lenger to, men ett kjøtt.

'and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one.'

Det som Gud har sammenføyd, skal mennesket ikke skille.»

'Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.'

Da de var kommet inn i huset, spurte disiplene ham igjen om dette.

Back at the house, the disciples asked him again about this matter.

Han sa til dem: «Den som skiller seg fra sin kone og gifter seg med en annen, begår ekteskapsbrudd mot henne.

He told them, 'Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.'

Og hvis en kvinne skiller seg fra sin mann og gifter seg med en annen, begår hun ekteskapsbrudd.»

And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.

Folk bar små barn til ham for at han skulle røre ved dem, men disiplene irettesatte dem.

People were bringing little children to Jesus so he could touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.

Da Jesus så det, ble han harm og sa til dem: «La barna komme til meg, og hindre dem ikke, for Guds rike hører slike til.

When Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, 'Let the little children come to me; do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.'

Sannelig, jeg sier dere: Den som ikke tar imot Guds rike som ett lite barn, kommer aldri inn i det.»

'Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.'

Og han tok dem opp i armene sine, la hendene på dem og velsignet dem.

And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them, and blessed them.

Da han gikk ut på veien, kom en mann løpende, falt på kne for ham og spurte: «Gode mester, hva skal jeg gjøre for å arve evig liv?»

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to him, knelt down before him, and asked, 'Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'

Jesus sa til ham: «Hvorfor kaller du meg god? Ingen er god uten én, nemlig Gud.

Jesus replied, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.'

Du kjenner budene: Du skal ikke bryte ekteskapet, du skal ikke slå i hjel, du skal ikke stjele, du skal ikke vitne falskt, du skal ikke bedra noen. Hedre din far og din mor.»

'You know the commandments: "Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honor your father and mother."'

Han svarte: «Mester, alt dette har jeg holdt fra jeg var ung.»

The man said to him, 'Teacher, I have kept all these commandments since my youth.'

Jesus så på ham og fikk ham kjær. Han sa til ham: «Én ting mangler du. Gå og selg alt du har, og gi til de fattige, så skal du få en skatt i himmelen. Kom så og følg meg.»

Jesus looked at him and loved him. 'One thing you lack,' he said. 'Go, sell everything you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'

Men han ble trist til sinns på grunn av det Jesus sa, og gikk bedrøvet bort, for han hadde mye eiendom.

The man’s face fell, and he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Da så Jesus seg omkring og sa til disiplene sine: «Hvor vanskelig det er for dem som har rikdom, å komme inn i Guds rike!»

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!'

Disiplene ble forskrekket over hans ord. Men Jesus svarte igjen og sa til dem: «Barn, hvor vanskelig det er å komme inn i Guds rike for dem som stoler på sine rikdommer!

The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, 'Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!'

Det er lettere for en kamel å gå gjennom et nåløye enn for en rik å komme inn i Guds rike.»

'It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.'

De ble enda mer forbauset og sa til hverandre: «Hvem kan da bli frelst?»

The disciples were even more astonished, and said among themselves, 'Who then can be saved?'

Jesus så på dem og sa: «For mennesker er det umulig, men ikke for Gud. For alt er mulig for Gud.»

Jesus looked at them and said, 'With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.'

Da tok Peter til orde og sa: «Se, vi har forlatt alt og fulgt deg.»

Then Peter spoke up, 'We have left everything to follow you!'

Jesus svarte: «Sannelig, jeg sier dere: Det er ingen som har forlatt hus, brødre, søstre, mor, far, barn eller åkrer for min skyld og for evangeliets skyld,

Jesus said, 'Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left home, brothers, sisters, father, mother, wife, children, or fields for my sake and for the gospel,

uten at han skal få hundrefold igjen nå i denne tid – hus, brødre, søstre, mødre, barn og åkrer, men også forfølgelser – og i den kommende verden evig liv.

'who will not receive a hundred times as much now in this present age—homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields—along with persecutions, and in the age to come, eternal life.

Men mange som er de første, skal bli de siste, og de siste de første.»

But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.'

Mens de var på vei opp til Jerusalem, gikk Jesus foran dem. De var forundret, og de som fulgte, var redde. Da tok han igjen de tolv til side og begynte å fortelle dem hva som skulle skje med ham:

They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were amazed, while those who followed were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him.

«Se, vi går opp til Jerusalem, og Menneskesønnen skal overgis til overprestene og de skriftlærde. De skal dømme ham til døden og overgi ham til hedningene.

'We are going up to Jerusalem,' he said, 'and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles.

De skal håne ham, spytte på ham, piske ham og drepe ham, men etter tre dager skal han oppstå.»

They will mock him, spit on him, flog him, and kill him. After three days he will rise.'

Da kom Jakob og Johannes, Sebedeus-sønnene, til ham og sa: «Mester, vi vil at du skal gjøre for oss det vi ber deg om.»

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, 'Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.'

Han spurte dem: «Hva vil dere jeg skal gjøre for dere?»

'What do you want me to do for you?' he asked.

De svarte: «La oss få sitte ved din høyre og venstre side i din herlighet.»

They replied, 'Let one of us sit at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.'

Men Jesus sa til dem: «Dere vet ikke hva dere ber om. Klarer dere å drikke det begeret jeg drikker eller bli døpt med den dåpen jeg må døpes med?»

Jesus said to them, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?'

De sa til ham: «Det kan vi.» Jesus sa til dem: «Det begeret jeg drikker, skal dere drikke, og den dåpen jeg døpes med, skal dere døpes med.

'We can,' they answered. Jesus said to them, 'You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,

Men hvem som skal sitte ved min høyre og venstre side, er ikke min sak å gi. Det er for dem som det er gjort i stand for.»

'but to sit at my right or left is not mine to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.'

Da de ti andre hørte dette, ble de sinte på Jakob og Johannes.

When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.

Men Jesus kalte dem til seg og sa: «Dere vet at de som regnes som herskere over folkene, undertrykker dem, og deres stormenn utøver makt over dem.

Jesus called them together and said, 'You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.'

Men slik skal det ikke være blant dere. Den som vil bli stor blant dere, skal være tjeneren deres,

'But it shall not be so among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,'

og den som vil være først blant dere, skal være alles slave.

'and whoever wants to be first must be a slave to all.'

For heller ikke Menneskesønnen har kommet for å la seg tjene, men for selv å tjene og gi sitt liv som en løsepenge for mange.»

'For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'

Så kom de til Jeriko. Da Jesus dro ut fra byen sammen med disiplene sine og en stor folkemengde, satt Bartimeus, sønn av Timeus, en blind mann, ved veien og tigget.

They came to Jericho. As Jesus was leaving the city with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind man named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside begging.

Da han hørte at det var Jesus fra Nasaret som kom, begynte han å rope: «Jesus, Davids Sønn, ha barmhjertighet med meg!»

When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, 'Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!'

Mange irettesatte ham for å få ham til å tie, men han ropte enda høyere: «Davids Sønn, ha barmhjertighet med meg!»

Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!'

Jesus stanset og sa: «Kall ham hit.» Og de ropte på den blinde og sa til ham: «Vær frimodig, reis deg opp! Han kaller på deg.»

Jesus stopped and said, 'Call him.' So they called to the blind man, 'Take heart! Get up; he is calling you.'

Han kastet kappen sin av seg, sprang opp og kom til Jesus.

Throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.

Jesus spurte ham: «Hva vil du jeg skal gjøre for deg?» Den blinde svarte: «Rabbuni, la meg få synet igjen!»

'What do you want me to do for you?' Jesus asked him. The blind man said, 'Rabboni, I want to see.'

Da sa Jesus til ham: «Gå, din tro har frelst deg.» Straks fikk han synet igjen, og han fulgte Jesus på veien.

Jesus said to him, 'Go, your faith has healed you.' Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
