Jesus svarte og talte igjen til dem i lignelser og sa:

Jesus answered and spoke again in parables to them, saying,

"Himmelriket kan sammenlignes med en konge som gjorde i stand et bryllup for sin sønn.

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,

Han sendte ut sine tjenere for å kalle de som var invitert til bryllupet, men de ville ikke komme.

and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come.

Igjen sendte han ut andre tjenere og sa: 'Si til de inviterte: "Se, jeg har gjort i stand middagen min. Oksene og slaktedyrene mine er slaktet, og alt er klart. Kom til bryllupet!"'

Again he sent out other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, "Behold, I have made ready my dinner. My oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the marriage feast!"'

Men de brydde seg ikke, og gikk sin vei, en til sin gård, en annen til sin handel.

But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise,

Resten tok tak i tjenerne hans, behandlet dem skammelig og drepte dem.

and the rest grabbed his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.

Da kongen hørte det, ble han sint, og han sendte sine hærer, ødela morderne og brente byen deres.

When the king heard that, he was angry, and he sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Da sa han til tjenerne sine: 'Bryllupet er klart, men de inviterte var ikke verdige.

"Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren't worthy.

Gå derfor ut til veikryssene, og inviter til bryllupet alle dere finner.'

Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the marriage feast.'

Tjenerne gikk ut på veiene og samlet alle de fant, både onde og gode. Bryllupet ble fylt med gjester.

Those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.

Men da kongen kom inn for å se gjestene, så han en mann som ikke hadde bryllupsklær på.

But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn't have on wedding clothing,

Han sa til ham: 'Venn, hvordan har du kommet inn her uten bryllupsklær?' Han ble målløs.

and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?' He was speechless.

Da sa kongen til tjenerne: 'Bind ham på hender og føtter, ta ham med og kast ham ut i mørket utenfor; der skal gråt og tenners gnissel være.'

Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness; there is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.'

For mange er kalt, men få er utvalgt."

For many are called, but few chosen."

Da gikk fariseerne bort og rådslå med hverandre om hvordan de kunne fange ham i ord.

Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk.

De sendte disiplene sine til ham sammen med herodianerne og sa: "Mester, vi vet at du er sannferdig og lærer Guds vei i sannhet, uansett hvem du underviser, for du viser ingen partiskhet.

They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter who you teach, for you aren't partial to anyone.

Si oss derfor, hva mener du? Er det tillatt å betale skatt til keiseren, eller ikke?"

Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"

Men Jesus skjønte deres ondskap og sa: "Hvorfor frister dere meg, hyklere?

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, "Why do you test me, you hypocrites?

Vis meg mynten for skatten." De brakte til ham en denar.

Show me the tax money." They brought to him a denarius.

Han spurte dem: "Hvem har dette bildet og denne inskripsjonen?"

He asked them, "Whose is this image and inscription?"

De sa til ham: "Keiserens." Da sa han til dem: "Gi derfor til keiseren det som er keiserens, og til Gud det som er Guds."

They said to him, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

Da de hørte det, undret de seg, forlot ham og gikk bort.

When they heard it, they marveled, and left him, and went away.

Samme dag kom saddukeerne til ham (de som sier at det ikke er noen oppstandelse) og spurte:

On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to him. They asked him,

«Mester, Moses sa: 'Dersom en mann dør og ikke har barn, skal hans bror gifte seg med enken og oppreise barn for sin bror.'

saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed for his brother.'

Vi hadde sju brødre hos oss. Den første giftet seg og døde uten å få barn, og etterlot sin kone til sin bror.

Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no seed left his wife to his brother.

På samme måte med den andre, og den tredje, til den sjuende.

In like manner the second also, and the third, to the seventh.

Til slutt døde også kvinnen.

After them all, the woman died.

I oppstandelsen, hvem av de sju skal da ha henne som kone? For de har alle hatt henne."

In the resurrection therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her."

Men Jesus svarte dem: "Dere tar feil, fordi dere ikke kjenner Skriftene eller Guds kraft.

But Jesus answered them, "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.

For i oppstandelsen gifter de seg ikke og blir heller ikke giftet bort, men er som Guds engler i himmelen.

For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like God's angels in heaven.

Men angående oppstandelsen av de døde: har dere ikke lest hva Gud har talt til dere,

But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven't you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,

'Jeg er Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud?' Gud er ikke de dødes Gud, men de levendes."

'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?' God is not the God of the dead, but of the living."

Da folkemengden hørte det, ble de slått av undring over hans lære.

When the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

Men da fariseerne hørte at han hadde brakt saddukeerne til taushet, kom de sammen.

But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered themselves together.

En av dem, en lovkyndig, spurte ham for å sette ham på prøve,

One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.

«Mester, hva er det største budet i loven?»

"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"

Jesus sa til ham: "'Du skal elske Herren din Gud av hele ditt hjerte og av hele din sjel og av hele ditt sinn.'

Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

Dette er det første og største budet.

This is the first and great commandment.

Det andre, som er likt, er dette: 'Du skal elske din neste som deg selv.'

A second likewise is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'

Hele loven og profetene henger på disse to budene."

The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

Men mens fariseerne var samlet, stilte Jesus dem et spørsmål,

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,

og sa: "Hva mener dere om Messias? Hvis sønn er han?" De sa til ham: "Davids."

saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "Of David."

Han sa til dem: "Hvordan kan da David i Ånden kalle ham Herre, når han sier,

He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,

'Herren sa til min Herre, Sett deg ved min høyre hånd, til jeg legger dine fiender som en skammel for dine føtter?'

'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, Until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?'

"Hvis da David kaller ham Herre, hvordan kan han være hans sønn?"

"If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?"

Ingen var i stand til å svare ham et ord, og fra den dagen våget ingen å spørre ham flere spørsmål.

No one was able to answer him a word, neither dared any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
