Etter mange dager kom Herrens ord til Elia i det tredje året og sa: Gå og vis deg for Akab, og jeg vil sende regn over jorden.

And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

Da gikk Elia for å vise seg for Akab. Det var en alvorlig hungersnød i Samaria.

And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

Akab kalte til seg Obadja, som var forvalteren i hans hus. (Obadja fryktet Herren meget.

And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

For da Jesabel utryddet Herrens profeter, tok Obadja hundre profeter og gjemte dem i huler, femti i hver, og forsynte dem med brød og vann.)

For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

Akab sa til Obadja: Gå ut i landet, til alle vannkilder og bekker; kanskje vi finner gress, så vi kan holde hestene og muldyrene i live og ikke miste alle dyrene.

And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

Så delte de landet mellom seg for å gå igjennom det: Akab gikk en vei for seg selv, og Obadja gikk en annen vei for seg selv.

So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

Mens Obadja var på vei, møtte han Elia. Han kjente ham igjen, falt på ansiktet, og sa: Er det deg, min herre Elia?

And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

Han svarte: Det er meg. Gå og fortell din herre: Se, Elia er her.

And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

Men Obadja sa: Hva har jeg syndet, at du vil overlevere din tjener i Akabs hånd så han dreper meg?

And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

Så sant Herren din Gud lever, det finnes ikke et folk eller kongerike som min herre ikke har sendt for å lete etter deg. Og når de sa: Han er ikke her, tok han en ed av kongeriket og folket at de ikke hadde funnet deg.

As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

Og nå sier du: Gå, fortell din herre: Se, Elia er her.

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

Det vil skje, så snart jeg har gått fra deg, at Herrens Ånd vil føre deg til et sted jeg ikke vet; når jeg så kommer og forteller Akab, og han ikke finner deg, vil han drepe meg. Men jeg, din tjener, har fryktet Herren fra min ungdom.

And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

Har ikke min herre fått vite hva jeg gjorde da Jesabel drepte Herrens profeter, hvordan jeg skjulte hundre av Herrens profeter, femti i hver hule, og forsynte dem med brød og vann?

Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD'S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

Og nå sier du: Gå, fortell din herre: Se, Elia er her, og han vil drepe meg.

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

Elia sa: Så sant Herren, hærskarenes Gud, lever, han som jeg står for, i dag skal jeg vise meg for ham.

And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.

Så gikk Obadja og møtte Akab og fortalte ham dette; og Akab dro for å møte Elia.

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

Da Akab så Elia, sa han til ham: Er det du som volder trengsel for Israel?

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

Han svarte: Jeg har ikke voldt Israel trengsel, men du og din fars hus, fordi dere har forlatt Herrens bud og fulgt Baalene.

And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

Send nå bud og samle hele Israel til meg ved Karmelfjellet, samt Baals profeter, fire hundre og femti, og Asjera-profetene, fire hundre, som spiser ved Jesabels bord.

Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

Akab sendte bud til hele Israel og samlet profetene til Karmelfjellet.

So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

Elia trådte fram for hele folket og sa: Hvor lenge vil dere halte mellom to meninger? Hvis Herren er Gud, så følg ham; men hvis Baal er det, så følg ham. Folket svarte ham ikke ett ord.

And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

Da sa Elia til folket: Jeg alene er igjen som Herrens profet, men Baals profeter er fire hundre og femti menn.

Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

La dem derfor gi oss to okser; la dem velge en okse for seg, skjære den i stykker og legge den på veden, men de skal ikke tenne ild på det. Jeg vil gjøre i stand den andre oksen og legge den på veden, men ikke tenne ild.

Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

Så skal dere påkalle navnet til deres guder, og jeg vil påkalle navnet til Herren. Den Gud som svarer med ild, han er Gud. Hele folket svarte og sa: Det er godt snakket.

And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

Elia sa til Baals profeter: Velg dere en okse for dere selv og gjør den først i stand, for dere er mange, og påkall navnet til deres guder, men legg ikke ild på.

And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

De tok oksen som ble gitt dem, gjorde den i stand og påkalte navnet til Baal fra morgen til middag, og sa: Baal, hør oss! Men det var ingen stemme og ingen som svarte; de sprang omkring alteret som var laget.

And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

Ved middagstid begynte Elia å håne dem og sa: Rop høyere, for han er jo en gud! Kanskje han tenker på noe, eller han har trukket seg tilbake, eller han er på reise, kanskje han sover og må vekkes.

And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

De ropte høyere og rispet seg selv med kniver og lanser, slik deres skikk var, til blodet strømmet nedover dem.

And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

Da det var forbi, profeterte de til tiden for aftenofferet, men det var verken stemme eller svar eller noen som brydde seg.

And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

Elia sa til hele folket: Kom nær til meg! Hele folket kom nær til ham, og han reparerte Herrens alter som var nedrevet.

And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

Elia tok tolv steiner, i samsvar med tallet på stammene til Jakobs sønner, til ham som Herrens ord var kommet til og hadde sagt: Israel skal være ditt navn.

And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

Med steinene bygde han et alter for Herrens navn, og laget en grøft rundt alteret, så stor at den kunne romme to mål med såkorn.

And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

Han la veden i orden, skar oksen i stykker og la den på veden, og sa: Fyll fire krukker med vann og hell det over brennofferet og veden.

And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

Så sa han: Gjør det en gang til. Og de gjorde det igjen. Han sa: Gjør det en tredje gang. Og de gjorde det en tredje gang.

And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

Vannet rant rundt om alteret, og han fylte også grøften med vann.

And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

Da det ble tid for aftenofferet, steg profeten Elia fram og sa: Herre, Abrahams, Isaks og Israels Gud, la det bli kjent i dag at du er Gud i Israel, og at jeg er din tjener, og at jeg har gjort alt dette etter ditt ord.

And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

Hør meg, Herre, hør meg, så dette folket kan kjenne at du, Herre, er Gud, og du har vendt deres hjerter tilbake igjen.

Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

Da falt Herrens ild og fortærte brennofferet, veden, steinene og jorden, og slikket opp vannet i grøften.

Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

Da hele folket så dette, falt de på sitt ansikt og sa: Herren, han er Gud! Herren, han er Gud!

And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

Elia sa til dem: Ta Baals profeter; la ingen av dem unnslippe. Så grep de dem, og Elia førte dem ned til Kisonbekken og drepte dem der.

And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

Elia sa til Akab: Gå opp, spis og drikk, for det høres som lyden av kraftig regn.

And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

Så gikk Akab opp for å spise og drikke, mens Elia gikk opp på Karmelfjellets topp og kastet seg ned på jorden med ansiktet mellom knærne.

So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

Han sa til sin tjener: Gå opp nå, se mot havet. Han gikk opp og så, og sa: Det er ingenting. Han sa: Gå igjen, sju ganger.

And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

På den sjuende gangen sa han: Se, en liten sky, som en manns hånd, stiger opp av havet. Da sa han: Gå opp og si til Akab: Spenn for vognen din og dra ned, ellers kan regnet hindre deg.

And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

I mellomtiden ble himmelen svart av skyer og vind, og det kom et sterkt regn. Akab red og dro til Jisre'el.

And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

Herrens hånd var over Elia, og han spente belte om hoftene og løp foran Akab helt til inngangen til Jisre'el.

And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
