Da dro Nahash, ammonitten, opp og beleiret Jabesh-gilead. Alle mennene i Jabesh sa til Nahash: Lag en avtale med oss, så skal vi tjene deg.

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

Nahash, ammonitten, svarte dem: På denne betingelsen vil jeg inngå en avtale med dere, at jeg får stikke ut alle høyre øyne deres for å gjøre det til en vannære for hele Israel.

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

De eldste i Jabesh sa til ham: Gi oss sju dagers frist, så vi kan sende budbringere over hele Israels grenser. Hvis ingen kommer og redder oss, vil vi komme ut til deg.

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Budbringerne kom til Saul i Gibea og fortalte nyhetene til folket, og alle begynte å gråte høyt.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

Og se, Saul kom fra åkeren bak buskapen, og Saul spurte: Hva plager folket siden de gråter? De fortalte ham da hva mennene fra Jabesh hadde sagt.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

Da Saul hørte dette, kom Guds Ånd over ham, og han ble veldig sint.

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

Han tok et par okser, hogg dem opp i stykker og sendte dem rundt over hele Israels land ved budbringernes hender, mens han sa: Slik skal det gjøres med oksene til den som ikke følger Saul og Samuel. Da falt frykten for Herren over folket, og de kom alle sammen som én mann.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

Da han talte dem opp i Besek, var det tre hundre tusen israelitter og tretti tusen menn fra Juda.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

De sa til budbringerne som kom: Slik skal dere si til mennene i Jabesh-gilead: I morgen, når solen er het, skal dere få hjelp. Da budbringerne kom og fortalte dette til mennene i Jabesh, ble de glade.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Så sa mennene i Jabesh: I morgen kommer vi ut til dere, og dere kan gjøre med oss hva som virker godt for dere.

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

Dagen etter delte Saul folket i tre underavdelinger, og de kom inn i fiendens leir ved morgenvakten og slo ammonittene til varmebølgen steg. De som overlevde ble så spredt at ikke to av dem ble igjen sammen.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

Folket sa til Samuel: Hvem var det som sa: Skal Saul herske over oss? Bring mennene hit, så vi kan drepe dem.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

Men Saul sa: Ingen skal drepes i dag, for i dag har Herren brakt frelse til Israel.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

Da sa Samuel til folket: Kom, la oss dra til Gilgal og fornye kongedømmet der.

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

Så dro hele folket til Gilgal, og der gjorde de Saul til konge for Herrens ansikt i Gilgal. Der ofret de fellesskapsofre for Herren, og der gledet Saul og alle Israels menn seg stort.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
