Det skjedde da kongen satt i huset sitt, og Herren hadde gitt ham ro fra alle fiendene rundt ham,

And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies;

at kongen sa til profeten Natan: «Se, nå bor jeg i et hus av sedertre, men Guds ark bor innenfor teltgardiner.»

That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.

Natan sa til kongen: «Gå, gjør alt som ligger deg på hjertet, for Herren er med deg.»

And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.

Men samme natt kom Herrens ord til Natan og sa:

And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying,

«Gå og si til min tjener David: Så sier Herren: Skal du bygge meg et hus å bo i?

Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?

For jeg har ikke bodd i noe hus siden jeg førte Israels barn opp fra Egypt, til denne dag, men har vandret i telt og i tabernakel.

Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

Overalt hvor jeg har vandret med alle Israels barn, har jeg noen gang sagt et ord til et av Israels stammer, dem som jeg befalte å være hyrder for mitt folk Israel, og sagt: Hvorfor har dere ikke bygd meg et hus av sedertre?

In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar?

Så skal du derfor si til min tjener David: Så sier Herren, Allhærs Gud: Jeg tok deg fra beitemarkene, fra å følge sauene, til å være fyrste over mitt folk, Israel.

Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:

Og jeg var med deg overalt hvor du gikk, og har gjort ende på alle dine fiender foran deg, og har gjort ditt navn stort, som navnet til de store mennene på jorden.

And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

Jeg vil også gi et sted for mitt folk Israel, og jeg vil plante dem, så de kan bo i sitt eget land, og ikke flytte mer; heller ikke skal ondskapens barn plage dem mer, slik som før,

Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,

fra den tiden jeg satte dommere over mitt folk Israel, og har gitt deg ro fra alle dine fiender. Herren forkynner også for deg at han vil bygge deg et hus.

And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.

Og når dine dager er fullkommet, og du hviler med dine fedre, vil jeg oppreise din ætt etter deg, som kommer fra ditt eget legeme, og jeg vil stadfeste hans kongedømme.

And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

Han skal bygge et hus for mitt navn, og jeg vil stadig opprettholde tronen for hans kongedømme for evig.

He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

Jeg vil være hans far, og han skal være min sønn. Om han gjør urett, vil jeg tukte ham med menneskers ris, og med plager fra menneskebarn;

I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

men min miskunn skal ikke vike bort fra ham, slik jeg tok den bort fra Saul, som jeg avsatte foran deg.

But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

Ditt hus og ditt kongedømme skal være stadfestet for evig for deg; din trone skal være for evig.

And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

I samsvar med alle disse ordene, og i samsvar med hele denne visjonen, talte Natan til David.

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Da gikk kong David inn og satte seg for Herren, og han sa: «Hvem er jeg, Herre Gud? Og hva er mitt hus, at du har ført meg så langt?

Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?

Og dette var ennå en liten ting i dine øyne, Herre Gud; men du har også talt om din tjeners hus langt fremover. Dette er da menneskets vesen, Herre Gud?

And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?

Hva kan David mer si til deg? For du, Herre Gud, kjenner din tjener.

And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant.

For din ords skyld, og etter ditt hjerte, har du gjort alle disse store tingene for å la din tjener kjenne dem.

For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.

Derfor er du stor, Herre Gud: For det finnes ingen som deg, heller ingen Gud utenom deg, i henhold til alt vi har hørt med våre ører.

Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

Og hvilket folk på jorden er som ditt folk, som Israel, som Gud gikk for å løskjøpe som et folk for seg selv, og for å gjøre seg et navn, og for å gjøre store og fryktinngytende ting for ditt land, foran ditt folk, som du har løskjøpt for deg fra Egypt, fra folkene og deres guder?

And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?

For du har stadfestet ditt folk Israel som et folk for deg for evig, og du, Herre, er blitt deres Gud.

For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.

Og nå, Herre Gud, ordet som du har talt om din tjener, og om hans hus, la det bli stadfestet for evig, og gjør som du har sagt.

And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.

La ditt navn bli opphøyet for evig, slik at man sier: Herren, hærskarenes Gud, er Israels Gud; og la din tjener Davids hus bli stadfestet for ditt åsyn.

And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee.

For du, Herre, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, har åpenbart dette for din tjener og sagt: Jeg vil bygge deg et hus. Derfor har din tjener funnet mot til å be denne bønn til deg.

For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.

Og nå, Herre Gud, du er den Gud, og dine ord er sannhet, og du har lovet denne godheten til din tjener:

And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

La det nå behage deg å velsigne din tjeners hus, så det kan bestå for evig for ditt åsyn. For du, Herre Gud, har sagt det; og med din velsignelse, la din tjeners hus bli velsignet for evig.

Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
