Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

Mens Belsasar smakte på vinen, ga han ordre om å hente de gull- og sølvkarene som hans far Nebukadnesar hadde tatt fra tempelet i Jerusalem, slik at kongen, hans fyrster, hans koner og hans medhustruer kunne drikke av dem.

Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

Da hentet de de gullkarene som var tatt fra Guds tempel i Jerusalem, og kongen, hans fyrster, hans koner og hans medhustruer drakk av dem.

Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

De drakk vin og priste gudene av gull, sølv, kobber, jern, tre og stein.

They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

I samme stund kom det fingre av en menneskehånd som skrev på veggen i kongens palass, ved lysestaken; og kongen så hånden som skrev.

In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

Da ble kongens ansikt forandret, og tankene hans skremte ham, slik at hoftene hans ristet og knærne slo mot hverandre.

Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

Kongen ropte høyt for å få inn stjernetydere, kaldeere og spåmenn. Kongen talte og sa til Babylons vismenn: Den som kan lese denne skriften og gi meg tolkningen, skal bli kledd i purpur, få en gullkjede om halsen og bli den tredje makthaver i riket.

The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Da kom alle kongens vismenn inn, men de kunne ikke lese skriften eller gi kongen tolkningen.

Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

Da ble kong Belsasar sterkt urolig, og ansiktet hans forandret seg, og stormennene hans var forfjamset.

Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

Dronningen kom nå inn i gjestebudshallen på grunn av kongens og stormennenes ord. Dronningen talte og sa: Å kongen, leve evig! La ikke dine tanker skremme deg eller la ansiktet ditt forandre seg.

Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

Det er en mann i ditt rike som har den hellige guders ånd i seg. I din fars dager ble lys, innsikt og visdom, som visdommen til gudene, funnet i ham. Kong Nebukadnesar, din far, gjorde ham til leder for trolldomskunstnerne, stjernetydere, kaldeere og spåmenn.

There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the ys of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

Det er på grunn av en utmerket ånd, kunnskap, innsikt til å tyde drømmer, forklare gåter og løse vanskelige problemer at denne Daniel, som kongen kalte Beltesasar, ble kjent. La nå Daniel bli kalt, og han vil gi tolkningen.

Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same niel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let niel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

Da ble Daniel ført inn for kongen. Og kongen talte og sa til Daniel: Er du den Daniel som er en av de bortførte fra Juda, som kongen min far førte ut fra Juda?

Then was niel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto niel, Art thou that niel, which art of the children of the captivity of Juh, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

Jeg har hørt om deg, at guders ånd er i deg, og at lys, innsikt og enestående visdom finnes i deg.

I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

Nå har de vise menn, stjernetydere, blitt brakt inn for meg, så de skulle lese denne skriften og gi meg tolkningen, men de kunne ikke gi tolkningen.

And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

Men jeg har hørt om deg, at du kan gi tolkninger og løse vanskelige problemer. Nå, hvis du kan lese skriften og gi meg tolkningen, skal du bli kledd i purpur, få en gullkjede om halsen og bli den tredje makthaver i riket.

And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Da svarte Daniel og sa til kongen: La dine gaver være for deg selv, og gi dine belønninger til en annen; likevel vil jeg lese skriften for kongen og gi ham tolkningen.

Then niel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

Å konge, Den Høyeste Gud ga din far Nebukadnesar et rike, storhet, herlighet og ære.

O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

For den storhet han ga ham, skalv og fryktet alle folkeslag, nasjoner og tungemål foran ham. De han ønsket, drepte han, og de han ønsket, lot han leve; de han ønsket, opphøyet han, og de han ønsket, fornedret han.

And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

Men da hans hjerte ble hovmodig og hans sinn hardnet i stolthet, ble han avsatt fra sin kongetrone, og hans herlighet ble tatt fra ham.

But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

Han ble drevet bort fra menneskene, og hans hjerte ble som dyrenes, han bodde blant villæsler, de fôret han med gress som okser, og hans kropp ble våt av himmelens dugg, inntil han erkjente at den høyeste Gud rår over menneskenes riker og kan sette den han vil over dem.

And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

Men du, hans sønn Belsasar, har ikke ydmyket ditt hjerte, selv om du visste alt dette.

And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

Du har opphøyd deg mot himmelens Herre. Du har latt karene fra hans hus bli båret inn for deg, og du og dine stormenn, dine koner og dine medhustruer har drukket vin av dem. But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

Derfor ble denne hånden sendt fra ham, og denne skriften ble skrevet.

Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

Og dette er skriften som ble skrevet: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

Dette er tolkningen av det skrevne: MENE; Gud har telt ditt rike og gjort slutt på det.

This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

TEKEL; Du er blitt veid på vekten og funnet for lett.

TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

PERES; Ditt rike er delt og gitt til mederne og perserne.

PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

Da befalte Belsasar, og de kledde Daniel i purpur, satte en gullkjede om halsen hans og kunngjorde at han skulle være den tredje makthaver i riket.

Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed niel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Samme natt ble Belsasar, kongen av kaldeerne, drept.

In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

Og Dareios, mederen, tok kongeriket, da han var omkring sekstito år gammel.

And rius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
