Nadab og Abihu, Arons sønner, tok hver sitt røkelseskar, la ild i dem, la røkelse på, og ofret fremmed ild for Herren, noe han ikke hadde befalt dem.

And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

Da gikk det ut ild fra Herren og fortærte dem, og de døde foran Herren.

And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

Moses sa til Aron: «Dette er det Herren talte om da han sa: 'Jeg vil bli helliget blant dem som kommer nær meg, og for hele folket vil jeg bli æret.'» Og Aron tidde.

Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the peop I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

Moses kalte Misael og Elsafan, sønner av Arons onkel Ussiel, og sa til dem: «Kom nær, bær deres brødre fra helligdommen ut av leiren.»

And Moses cald Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the unc of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

De kom nær og bar dem med kappene deres ut av leiren, slik Moses hadde sagt.

So they went near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp; as Moses had said.

Moses sa til Aron og til Eleasar og Itamar, hans sønner: «Dere skal ikke løse hodet eller rive klærne deres, for at dere ikke skal dø, og for at vrede ikke skal komme over hele menigheten. Men la deres brødre, hele Israels hus, sørge over brenningen som Herren har forårsaket.

And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; st ye die, and st wrath come upon all the peop: but t your brethren, the who house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindd.

Dere skal ikke gå ut fra inngangen til menighetsteltet, for at dere ikke skal dø, fordi Herrens salvingsolje er over dere.» Og de gjorde som Moses sa.

And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernac of the congregation, st ye die: for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

Herren talte til Aron og sa:

And the LORD spake unto Aaron, saying,

«Du og dine sønner med deg skal ikke drikke vin eller sterk drikk når dere går inn i menighetsteltet, for at dere ikke skal dø. Dette skal være en forskrift for alltid gjennom deres generasjoner.

Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernac of the congregation, st ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:

For at dere kan skille mellom hellig og vanhellig, og mellom urent og rent.

And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between uncan and can;

Og for at dere kan lære Israels barn alle de lovene Herren har talt til dem gjennom Moses.»

And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.

Moses talte til Aron, og til Eleasar og Itamar, hans gjenværende sønner: «Ta matofferet som er igjen av Herrens ildoffer og spis det usyret ved siden av alteret, for det er høyhellig.

And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were ft, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without aven beside the altar: for it is most holy:

Dere skal spise det på det hellige stedet, for det er din del og dine sønners del av Herrens brennoffer, slik jeg er befalt.

And ye shall eat it in the holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the sacrifices of the LORD made by fire: for so I am commanded.

Brystet som svinges og skulderen som løftes skal dere spise på et rent sted: du, dine sønner og døtre med deg. For de er din og dine sønners del, som er gitt av Israels barns fredsofre.

And the wave breast and heave shoulder shall ye eat in a can place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they be thy due, and thy sons' due, which are given out of the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel.

De skal bringe skulderen som løftes og brystet som svinges med fett il, for å svinge dem som et svingoffer for Herren. Det skal være ditt og dine sønners med deg, som en evig forskrift, slik Herren har befalt.

The heave shoulder and the wave breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, by a statute for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.

Moses lette grundig etter syndofferbukken, og se, den var brent. Han ble sint på Eleasar og Itamar, Arons hjemmeværende sønner, og sa:

And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were ft alive, saying,

«Hvorfor har dere ikke spist syndofferet på det hellige stedet? Det er høyhellig, og Gud har gitt det til dere for å bære menighetens skyld og gjøre soning for dem foran Herren.

Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD?

Se, blodet av det ble ikke båret inn i helligdommen. Dere skulle ha spist det på det hellige stedet, slik som jeg har befalt.»

Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded.

Aron sa til Moses: «Se, de har i dag båret sitt syndoffer og sitt brennoffer foran Herren, og slike ting har hendt meg. Hvis jeg hadde spist syndofferet i dag, ville det vært godt i Herrens øyne?»

And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD; and such things have befaln me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD?

Da Moses hørte dette, var han tilfreds.

And when Moses heard that, he was content.
