Og han begynte å tale til dem i lignelser. En mann plantet en vingård, satte et gjerde rundt den, gravde ut en vinpresse, bygde et vakttårn og leide den ut til vinbøndene før han reiste til et fjernt land.

And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.

Da tiden var inne, sendte han en tjener til vinbøndene for å motta av deres del av vingårdens frukt.

And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.

Men de grep ham, slo ham og sendte ham tomhendt bort.

And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.

Igjen sendte han en annen tjener, og ham kastet de steiner på, såret ham i hodet, og sendte ham bort på en skammelig måte.

And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.

Og igjen sendte han en tredje; ham drepte de, og mange andre også. Noen slo de, noen drepte de.

And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.

Han hadde ennå en sønn, sin elskede. Ham sendte han til slutt til dem og sa: De vil ha respekt for min sønn.

Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.

Men disse vinbøndene sa til hverandre: Dette er arvingen; kom, la oss drepe ham, så vil arven bli vår.

But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.

Så grep de ham, drepte ham og kastet ham ut av vingården.

And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.

Hva vil da vingårdens herre gjøre? Han vil komme og ødelegge vinbøndene og gi vingården til andre.

What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.

Har dere ikke lest denne skriften: Steinen som bygningsmennene forkastet, er blitt hjørnesteinen?

And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

Dette er Herrens verk, og det er underfullt i våre øyne.

This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

De ville gripe ham, men fryktet folket, for de visste at han hadde fortalt lignelsen mot dem. Så de lot ham være og gikk bort.

And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.

Og de sendte noen av fariseerne og herodianerne til ham for å fange ham i hans ord.

And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.

Da de kom, sa de til ham: Mester, vi vet at du er sannferdig og ikke bryr deg om folks mening, for du ser ikke etter hvem folk er, men lærer Guds vei i sannhet. Er det lovlig å betale skatt til keiseren eller ikke?

And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

Skal vi gi, eller skal vi ikke gi? Men han kjente deres hykleri og sa til dem: Hvorfor setter dere meg på prøve? Bring meg en denar for at jeg kan se den.

Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.

Så brakte de den til ham, og han sa til dem: Hvis bilde og innskrift er dette? Og de sa til ham: Keiserens.

And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.

Da svarte Jesus og sa til dem: Gi keiseren det som tilhører keiseren, og Gud det som tilhører Gud. Og de undret seg over ham.

And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

Da kom saddukeerne til ham, de som sier at det ikke er noen oppstandelse, og de spurte ham og sa:

Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

Mester, Moses skrev for oss: Hvis en manns bror dør og etterlater en kone uten barn, skal hans bror gifte seg med henne for å skaffe sin bror avkom.

Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

Det var syv brødre. Den første tok en kone, og døde uten å etterlate barn.

Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.

Den andre tok henne og døde uten å etterlate barn, og den tredje på samme måte.

And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.

Alle de syv hadde henne, men ikke noe barn ble etterlatt. Til slutt døde også kvinnen.

And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.

I oppstandelsen, når de står opp, hvem av dem skal hun da være kone til, for alle de syv hadde henne som kone?

In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.

Jesus svarte dem: Feiler dere ikke fordi dere ikke forstår skriftene eller Guds makt?

And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?

Når de står opp fra de døde, gifter de seg ikke, og blir heller ikke gitt i ekteskap, men er som englene i himmelen.

For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.

Når det gjelder de døde, at de står opp: Har dere ikke lest i Moseboken, hvordan Gud talte til ham i tornebusken og sa: Jeg er Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud?

And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

Han er ikke de dødes Gud, men de levendes Gud. Dere tar stort feil.

He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.

En av de skriftlærde kom bort og hørte dem diskutere, og da han merket at han svarte godt, spurte han: Hvilket er det første bud av alle?

And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

Jesus svarte ham: Det første er: Hør, Israel! Herren vår Gud, Herren er én.

And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

Og du skal elske Herren din Gud av hele ditt hjerte, av hele din sjel, av hele ditt sinn og av all din styrke. Dette er det første bud.

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Og det andre som er likt, er dette: Du skal elske din neste som deg selv. Det finnes ikke noe bud som er større enn disse.

And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Og den skriftlærde sa til ham: Vel talt, Mester. Du har sagt sannheten; for det er bare én Gud, og det er ingen annen enn ham.

And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

Å elske ham av hele sitt hjerte, av hele sin forståelse, av hele sin sjel og av all sin styrke, og å elske sin neste som seg selv, er mer verd enn alle brennoffer og offergaver.

And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Da Jesus så at han svarte klokt, sa han til ham: Du er ikke langt fra Guds rike. Og etter det våget ingen å stille ham flere spørsmål.

And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

Mens Jesus underviste i templet, svarte han og sa: Hvordan kan de skriftlærde si at Kristus er Davids sønn?

And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?

For David selv sa ved Den Hellige Ånd: Herren sa til min Herre: Sett deg ved min høyre hånd til jeg får lagt dine fiender som en skammel for dine føtter.

For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

David selv kaller ham Herre; hvordan kan han da være hans sønn? Og de vanlige folk hørte ham gjerne.

David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.

Han sa til dem i sin lære: Vokt dere for de skriftlærde, som liker å gå rundt i lange klær og elsker hilsener på torgene,

And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,

De beste plassene i synagogene, og de øverste rommene ved festmåltidene,

And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:

De som eter opp enkers hus og for skams skyld ber lange bønner: Slike vil få desto større dom.

Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

Og Jesus satte seg ned overfor tempelkisten og så hvordan folket la penger i kisten. Mange rike la i mye.

And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

En fattig enke kom og la i to små mynter, noe som er en kvadrant.

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

Han kalte sine disipler til seg og sa: Sannelig, jeg sier dere: Denne fattige enken har lagt i mer enn alle de andre som la i tempelkisten.

And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

For alle de andre ga av sin overflod, men hun ga av sin fattigdom alt hun hadde, hele sitt livsopphold.

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
