Da Jesus ble født i Betlehem i Judea, på kong Herodes' tid, kom det vismenn fra øst til Jerusalem.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

De sa: Hvor er den jødenes konge som nettopp er født? Vi har sett stjernen hans i øst, og vi har kommet for å tilbe ham.

Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

Da kong Herodes hørte dette, ble han urolig, og hele Jerusalem med ham.

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

Og han samlet alle overprestene og de skriftlærde blant folket og spurte dem hvor Messias skulle bli født.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

De svarte ham: I Betlehem i Judea, for slik står det skrevet hos profeten:

And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

Og du, Betlehem i Juda land, er slett ikke den minste blant fyrster i Juda; for fra deg skal en hersker komme, som skal styre mitt folk Israel.

And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Da kalte Herodes vismennene til seg i hemmelighet og forhørte seg nøye om når stjernen hadde vist seg.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

Deretter sendte han dem til Betlehem og sa: Gå og let nøye etter barnet, og når dere har funnet ham, meld tilbake til meg, slik at jeg også kan komme og tilbe ham.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

Etter at de hadde hørt på kongen, dro de av sted. Stjernen som de hadde sett i øst, gikk foran dem, helt til den stanset over stedet der barnet var.

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

Da de så stjernen, ble de overveldet av stor glede.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

Og da de kom inn i huset, så de barnet med Maria, hans mor, og de falt ned og tilba ham. De åpnet også sine skatter og frembar gaver til ham: gull, røkelse og myrra.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Men da de i en drøm ble advart av Gud om ikke å vende tilbake til Herodes, dro de i stedet en annen vei tilbake til sitt eget land.

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

Da de hadde dratt, viste Herrens engel seg i en drøm for Josef og sa: Stå opp, ta barnet og moren, og flykt til Egypt! Bli der til jeg sier ifra, for Herodes vil lete etter barnet for å drepe det.

And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

Han sto da opp, tok barnet og moren om natten, og dro til Egypt.

When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

Og der ble han til Herodes var død, for slik skulle det oppfylles som Herren hadde sagt gjennom profeten: Fra Egypt kalte jeg min sønn.

And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

Da Herodes innså at han var blitt narret av vismennene, ble han rasende. Han sendte ut folk og drepte alle guttebarn i Betlehem og hele området rundt, som var to år og yngre, i henhold til den tiden han hadde fått nøye beskjed om av vismennene.

Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

Da ble det oppfylt som er sagt ved profeten Jeremias:

Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

I Rama hørtes en røst, gråt og høy klage. Rakel gråt over sine barn og ville ikke la seg trøste, fordi de ikke er mer.

In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

Men da Herodes var død, se, da viste Herrens engel seg i en drøm for Josef i Egypt.

But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

Og han sa: Stå opp, ta barnet og moren, og dra til Israels land! De som forsøkte å ta barnets liv, er døde.

Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

Han sto da opp, tok barnet og moren, og dro tilbake til Israels land.

And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

Men da han hørte at Arkelaus regjerte i Judea i stedet for sin far Herodes, våget han ikke å dra dit. Og etter å ha fått beskjed i en drøm, trakk han seg tilbake til Galilea.

But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

Der bosatte han seg i en by som heter Nasaret. Slik ble det oppfylt som er sagt ved profetene: Han skal kalles en nasareer.

And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
