If you rebel against the LORD today, tomorrow He will be angry with the entire assembly of Israel. 19 If, however, the land of your possession is unclean, then come over to the land the LORD possesses, where the LORD's tabernacle stands, and settle among us. But do not rebel against the LORD or against us by building an altar for yourselves other than the altar of the LORD our God. 20 Did not Achan son of Zerah commit a treachery regarding the devoted things, and wrath fell upon the entire assembly of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.' 21 Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the heads of the clans of Israel: 22 The Mighty One, God, the LORD—the Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows, and let Israel also know! If it was in rebellion or treachery against the LORD, do not spare us today. 23 If we have built an altar to turn away from following the LORD, or to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings, or to offer fellowship sacrifices on it, may the LORD Himself call us to account. 24 We did this because we feared that someday your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?’ 25 The LORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you—you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the LORD.’ So your descendants might cause ours to stop worshiping the LORD. 26 That is why we said, ‘Let us build an altar—not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, 27 but as a witness between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the LORD at His sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and fellowship offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD.’ 28 And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the altar of the LORD, which our ancestors built—not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’ 29 Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, and sacrifices other than the altar of the LORD our God that stands in front of His tabernacle. 30 Phinehas the priest, the leaders of the congregation, and the heads of the clans of Israel who were with him heard the words spoken by the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the Manassites, and they were pleased. 31 Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the Manassites, 'Today we know that the LORD is among us because you have not committed this act of treachery against Him. Instead, you have rescued the Israelites from the LORD's hand.' 32 Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites in the land of Gilead to the Israelites in the land of Canaan and brought back a report to them. 33 The Israelites were pleased with the report, and they praised God. They no longer talked about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived. 34 And the Reubenites and the Gadites named the altar 'A Witness Between Us that the LORD is God.'
  • Judg 20:1-9 : 1 Then all the Israelites went out, and the entire assembly came together as one man, from Dan to Beersheba and the land of Gilead, to the LORD at Mizpah. 2 The leaders of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, took their positions in the assembly of the people of God—four hundred thousand soldiers armed with swords. 3 The people of Benjamin heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites said, "Tell us, how did this terrible crime happen?" 4 The Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, answered, "My concubine and I came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night. 5 While we were there, the men of Gibeah attacked me. They surrounded the house during the night and intended to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died. 6 I took my concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel because they committed a vile and disgraceful act in Israel. 7 Now, all you Israelites, give your verdict and advice here and now. 8 All the people stood together as one and said, "None of us will go to his tent or turn back to his house. 9 This is what we will do to Gibeah: We will decide by casting lots. 10 We will take ten men out of every hundred, a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand across all the tribes of Israel. They will gather provisions for the army, so we can act against Gibeah in Benjamin for their disgraceful act in Israel. 11 So all the men of Israel were united together as one man against the city. 12 The tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What is this awful crime that has been committed among you?" 13 Now hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites would not listen to their fellow Israelites. 14 Instead, the Benjaminites gathered from their cities to Gibeah to go out to battle against the Israelites. 15 On that day, the Benjaminites mustered twenty-six thousand men armed with swords from their towns, not counting the seven hundred elite troops from Gibeah. 16 Among all these were seven hundred elite troops who were left-handed, each of them able to sling a stone at a hair and not miss. 17 The Israelites, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand soldiers armed with swords, all experienced warriors.
