He must die, because he has torn down Baal's altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.' 31 But Joash replied to all who stood against him, 'Will you plead Baal’s case? Will you save him? So they brought Samson from the prison, and he performed for them. They made him stand between the pillars. 26 Samson said to the servant who held his hand, 'Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.' 27 Now the temple was crowded with men and women. All the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28 Then Samson called to the LORD, 'Sovereign LORD, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.' 29 Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on one and his left hand on the other, 30 Samson said, 'Let me die with the Philistines!' Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. So he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
  • 1 Sam 5:3-7 : 3 When the people of Ashdod woke early the next morning, they found Dagon fallen face down on the ground before the Ark of the LORD. They picked up Dagon and returned it to its place. 4 But when they awoke early the next morning, they found Dagon fallen face down on the ground before the Ark of the LORD again. This time, Dagon’s head and the palms of his hands were broken off, lying on the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon remained. 5 For this reason, to this day, neither the priests of Dagon nor anyone who enters Dagon’s temple in Ashdod step on the threshold. 6 The LORD’s hand was heavy upon the people of Ashdod. • 1 Kgs 18:19-29 : 19 Now summon all Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table. 20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah approached all the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But the people said nothing. 22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left as a prophet of the LORD, but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let two bulls be given to us. Let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it into pieces, and lay it on the wood without setting fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood without setting fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire—He is God." All the people answered, "What you say is good." 25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not set fire to the wood.' 26 So they took the bull that was given to them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, 'O Baal, answer us!' But there was no response, no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made. 27 At noon, Elijah began to mock them, saying, 'Shout louder! Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.' 28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening offering. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

Alexander motioned with his hand and wanted to make a defense to the assembly. 34 But when the crowd realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
