Their kings, princes, priests, prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem have all been guilty. 33 They have turned their backs to Me and not their faces. Though I taught them persistently, they refused to listen or accept correction. 34 They set up detestable idols in the house that bears My name and defiled it. 35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Hinnom’s Son to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molech, something I never commanded nor even considered in My heart. They committed this detestable act to make Judah sin.

- Ezek 16:1-9 : 1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying: 2 Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations, 3 and say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites—your father was an Amorite and your mother was a Hittite.’ 4 On the day you were born, your umbilical cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you; you were not rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. 5 No eye looked on you with pity to do any of these things for you, out of compassion. Instead, you were thrown out into the open field, for you were despised on the day you were born. 6 Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay in your blood, I said to you, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you, ‘Live!’ 7 I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew and became tall and reached the age of maturity. Your breasts were formed, and your hair grew, but you were still naked and bare. 8 Then I passed by you again and saw you, and behold, you were at the age for love. So I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I made my vow to you, entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord GOD, and you became mine. 9 Then I washed you with water and rinsed the blood from you and anointed you with oil. 10 I clothed you with embroidered garments, put sandals of fine leather on you, wrapped you in fine linen, and covered you with silk. 11 I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your wrists and a necklace around your neck. 12 I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 So you were adorned with gold and silver, and your garments were of fine linen, silk, and embroidery. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil, and you became exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. 14 Your fame spread among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord GOD. 15 But you trusted in your beauty and acted like a prostitute because of your fame. You lavished your acts of prostitution on every passerby, willing to be his. 16 You took your garments and made colorful high places for yourself, and on them, you committed prostitution. Such things should not have happened, nor should they occur. 17 You also took the fine jewelry made of gold and silver that I had given you, and you made male idols for yourself and engaged in prostitution with them. 18 You took your embroidered garments to cover them, and you presented my oil and incense before them. 19 Also, the food I provided for you–the fine flour, oil, and honey that I fed you–you set before them as a pleasing aroma. And so it was, declares the Lord GOD. 20 You even took the sons and daughters you bore to me and sacrificed them to the idols as food. Was your prostitution not enough? 21 You slaughtered my children and offered them up by making them pass through fire to these idols. 22 In all your detestable practices and prostitution, you did not remember the days of your youth when you were naked and bare, kicking about in your blood. 23 Woe! Woe to you, declares the Lord GOD, after all your wickedness. 24 You built yourselves a mound and made high places at every street corner. 25 At the head of every street, you built your high places. You degraded your beauty by spreading your legs to every passerby and multiplied your acts of prostitution. 26 You engaged in prostitution with your lustful neighbors, the Egyptians, and multiplied your acts of prostitution to anger me. 27 So now I have stretched out my hand against you and reduced your portion. I gave you over to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd conduct. 28 You prostituted yourself with the Assyrians because you were never satisfied. Even after prostituting yourself with them, you were not satisfied. 29 You also multiplied your promiscuity in the land of Canaan and even with the Chaldeans, yet even with this, you were not satisfied. 30 ‘How weak is your heart,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘that you do all these things, the actions of a brazen prostitute! 31 When you built your mounds at the head of every road and made your high places in every street, you were not like a prostitute, because you scorned payment. 32 You adulterous wife, who prefers strangers instead of her own husband! 33 All prostitutes receive gifts, but you give gifts to all your lovers. You bribe them to come to you from all around for your acts of prostitution. 34 So your prostitution is the opposite of others; you gave payment instead of receiving it, and no one pays you. You are the opposite. 35 Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of the LORD. 36 This is what the Lord GOD says: Because you poured out your lust and exposed your nakedness in your promiscuity with your lovers and because of all your detestable idols and the blood of your children you gave to them, 37 therefore I am going to gather all your lovers with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side, and I will expose your nakedness to them, so they may see all your shame. 38 I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and shed blood. I will bring upon you the wrath and jealousy of my judgment. 39 I will deliver you into their hands, and they will tear down your mounds and demolish your high places. They will strip you of your clothes, take your fine jewelry, and leave you naked and bare. 40 They will bring a crowd against you, stone you to death, and cut you to pieces with their swords. 41 They will burn down your houses and execute judgment on you in the sight of many women. I will bring an end to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay fees to anyone. 42 Then my wrath against you will subside, and my jealousy will turn away from you. I will be calm and no longer angry. 43 Because you did not remember the days of your youth but enraged me with all these things, I will bring your conduct down upon your own head, declares the Lord GOD. Have you not committed lewdness in addition to all your other detestable acts? 44 Everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’ 45 You are a true daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and her children. And you are a sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. 46 Your elder sister was Samaria, who lived with her daughters to the north of you. Your younger sister was Sodom, who lived with her daughters to the south of you. 47 You not only followed their ways and acted according to their detestable practices but in a very short time, you became more depraved than they were in all your ways. 48 As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, your sister Sodom and her daughters did not do as you and your daughters have done. 49 Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of food, and abundant ease were hers and her daughters', but they did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 They became haughty and committed abominations before me; therefore, I removed them as I saw fit. 51 Samaria did not sin as much as you did. You multiplied your abominations more than they did, and your actions have justified your sisters in comparison to all your abominations. 52 Now bear your disgrace as you have judged your sisters. Because your sins were more abominable than theirs, they appear more righteous than you. So, be ashamed and bear your disgrace, for you have justified your sisters. 53 But I will restore their captivity—the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, Samaria and her daughters, and I will restore your captivity along with theirs. 54 In order that you may bear your disgrace and feel ashamed for all you have done, as you console them. 55 Your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, and Samaria and her daughters, will return to their former state, and you and your daughters will return to your former state. 56 You did not even mention your sister Sodom during the days of your pride, 57 before your own wickedness was exposed, like the time you were taunted by the daughters of Aram and all her neighbors, and by the daughters of the Philistines, who looked down on you from every side. 58 You have borne the penalty of your lewdness and abominations, declares the LORD. 59 For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you as you have done, since you despised the oath by breaking the covenant. 60 Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you receive your older and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant. 62 I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD. 63 So that you may remember and be ashamed, and never again open your mouth because of your disgrace, when I forgive you for all you have done, declares the Lord GOD.
- Ezek 20:1-9 : 1 In the seventh year, on the tenth day of the fifth month, some men from the elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and they sat before me. 2 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 3 Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Are you coming to inquire of me? As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will not let you inquire of me.' 4 Will you judge them, will you judge them, son of man? Let them know about the detestable practices of their ancestors. 5 Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On the day I chose Israel and lifted up my hand in an oath to the descendants of the house of Jacob, I made myself known to them in the land of Egypt and lifted up my hand to say, "I am the LORD your God."' 6 On that day I swore to them that I would bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands. 7 And I said to them, 'Each of you, get rid of the detestable things your eyes are set on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.' 8 But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; none of them got rid of the detestable things their eyes were set on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and unleash my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9 But I acted for the sake of my name, to keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and where I had made myself known to them by bringing them out of Egypt. 10 So I brought them out of the land of Egypt and led them into the wilderness. 11 I gave them my statutes and made known to them my ordinances, by which a person who obeys them will live. 12 Also, I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between me and them, so they would know that I am the LORD who makes them holy. 13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my statutes and rejected my ordinances—though by them a person will live if they do them—and they greatly profaned my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them in the wilderness to destroy them. 14 But I acted for the sake of my name, to keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 15 Also, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands— 16 because they rejected my ordinances, did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths, for their hearts followed after their idols. 17 Yet my eye spared them from destruction, and I did not destroy them completely in the wilderness. 18 I said to their children in the wilderness, 'Do not follow the statutes of your fathers, do not observe their ordinances, and do not defile yourselves with their idols. 19 'I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, keep my ordinances, and obey them. 20 Sanctify my Sabbaths, and they will be a sign between me and you so that you may know that I am the LORD your God.' 21 But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes, and they did not keep my ordinances to obey them, though by them a person will live. They profaned my Sabbaths, so I said I would pour out my wrath on them and unleash my anger against them in the wilderness. 22 But I withdrew my hand and acted for the sake of my name, to keep it from being profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 I also swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them throughout the lands, 24 because they did not carry out my ordinances but rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were fixed on their fathers' idols. 25 So I also gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live. 26 I defiled them through their own gifts, by making them cause all their firstborn to pass through the fire, in order to devastate them and make them know that I am the LORD. 27 Therefore, speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Yet in this, your fathers blasphemed me by acting treacherously against me.' 28 When I brought them into the land that I swore to give them, and they saw every high hill and every leafy tree, they offered their sacrifices there, provoked me with their offerings, placed their pleasing aromas, and poured out their drink offerings there. 29 I said to them: What is this high place to which you go? (It is called 'High Place' to this day.) 30 Therefore, say to the house of Israel: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Will you defile yourselves the way your fathers did and lust after their detestable things?' 31 When you offer your gifts and make your children pass through the fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. Shall I let you inquire of me, house of Israel? As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will not let you inquire of me. 32 What you have in mind will never happen. You say, 'We will be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone.' 33 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will rule over you with a mighty hand, an outstretched arm, and with outpoured wrath. 34 I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you have been scattered, with a mighty hand, an outstretched arm, and with outpoured wrath. 35 I will bring you into the wilderness of the nations, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face. 36 Just as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the Sovereign LORD. 37 I will cause you to pass under the rod and will bring you into the bond of the covenant. 38 I will purge you of those who rebel and transgress against me. Even though I bring them out from the land where they are living, they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD. 39 As for you, house of Israel, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you! But afterward, you will surely listen to me and no longer profane my holy name with your gifts and idols. 40 For on my holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD, there the entire house of Israel, all of them in the land, will worship me. There I will accept them, and there I will require their contributions, their choice gifts, and all their holy offerings. 41 With a pleasing aroma, I will accept you when I bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you were scattered. And I will show my holiness through you in the sight of the nations. 42 Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to your ancestors. 43 There you will remember your ways and all your deeds by which you defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves for all the evil you have done. 44 Then you will know that I am the LORD when I deal with you for the sake of my name, not according to your evil ways or your corrupt practices, house of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD.
- Ezek 22:1-9 : 1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying: 2 Son of man, will you judge? Will you judge the city of bloodshed and confront her with all her abominations? 3 Then say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: You city that sheds blood in her midst to bring her time closer, and makes idols to defile herself, 4 You have become guilty because of the blood you have shed, and you are defiled by the idols you made. You have brought your days near and have come to the end of your years. Therefore, I have made you a disgrace to the nations and a mockery to all the lands. 5 Those near and those far from you will mock you, you who are defiled in name and full of turmoil. 6 See, the princes of Israel, each one by his own might, have been in you to shed blood. 7 Within you, they have treated father and mother with contempt; they have oppressed the foreigner in your midst; they have wronged the orphan and the widow. 8 You have despised my holy things and profaned my Sabbaths. 9 The men in you who slander for the purpose of shedding blood eat at the high places; they commit lewdness in your midst. 10 In you, they have dishonored their fathers' nakedness; they have violated women during their impurity. 11 One man commits an abomination with his neighbor’s wife, another defiles his daughter-in-law with wickedness, and another violates his sister, his father’s daughter. 12 In you, they accept bribes to shed blood; they take interest and increase unlawfully. You have gained profit in extorting your neighbors, and you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign LORD. 13 See, I will strike my hands together in anger at the dishonest gain you have made and the bloodshed that has been done in your midst. 14 Will your heart stand firm? Will your hands be strong when I deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it. 15 I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you throughout the lands, and I will cleanse you from your impurity. 16 You will be profaned in yourself before the eyes of the nations, and you will know that I am the LORD. 17 The word of the LORD came to me, saying: 18 Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to me; all of them are bronze, tin, iron, and lead inside a furnace—they are the dross of silver. 19 Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because all of you have become dross, I am going to gather you into Jerusalem. 20 Just as silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin are gathered into a furnace to be melted with fire, so I will gather you in my anger and wrath, and I will deposit you there and melt you. 21 I will gather you together and blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and you will be melted in it. 22 As silver is melted in a furnace, so you will be melted in it, and you will know that I, the LORD, have poured out my wrath upon you. 23 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
- Hos 5:12-13 : 12 I am like a moth to Ephraim, and like rot to the house of Judah. 13 When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to the great king for help. But he cannot heal you or cure your wound.
- Mic 1:9 : 9 For her wound is incurable; it has even reached Judah. It has reached the gates of my people, even to Jerusalem itself.
- Mic 7:9 : 9 Because I have sinned against Him, I will bear the indignation of the LORD until He pleads my case and executes justice for me. He will bring me into the light, and I will see His righteousness.
- Zeph 3:1-5 : 1 Woe to the rebellious and defiled city, the oppressive one! 2 She listens to no voice, she accepts no discipline; she does not trust in the LORD, nor does she draw near to her God. 3 Her officials are roaring lions in her midst; her judges are wolves of the evening, leaving nothing for the morning. 4 Her prophets are reckless, treacherous men; her priests have profaned the sanctuary and have done violence to the law. 5 The LORD is righteous in her midst; He does no wrong. Morning by morning, He brings His justice to light; He does not fail, but the unjust knows no shame.
- Josh 9:10-11 : 10 and all He did to the two Amorite kings beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. 11 So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for the journey and go to meet them. Tell them: We are your servants; now make a treaty with us.’
- 2 Chr 36:14-17 : 14 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations. They defiled the house of the LORD, which He had sanctified in Jerusalem. 15 The LORD, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them repeatedly through His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and His dwelling place. 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD rose against His people beyond remedy. 17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in their sanctuary and showed no mercy to young men, young women, the elderly, or the infirm; God delivered them all into his hand.
- Ezra 9:6-7 : 6 I said, 'My God, I am ashamed and humiliated to lift my face to you, my God, because our sins are higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached the heavens.' 7 'From the days of our ancestors until now, we have been steeped in great guilt. Because of our sins, we, our kings and priests, have been handed over to the kings of the lands, to the sword, captivity, plunder, and humiliation, as it is today.'
- Ezra 9:13 : 13 After everything that has happened to us because of our evil deeds and great guilt—though you, our God, have punished us less than our sins deserved and have given us a remnant like this—
- Neh 9:26-36 : 26 But they were disobedient and rebelled against You. They cast Your law behind their backs and killed Your prophets who warned them to turn back to You. They committed terrible blasphemies. 27 So You handed them over to their enemies, who oppressed them. But in their time of distress, they cried out to You, and You heard from heaven. In Your great mercy, You gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies. 28 But as soon as they had rest, they returned to doing evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to their enemies, who ruled over them. Yet when they again cried out to You, You heard from heaven and rescued them many times in Your abundant mercy. 29 You warned them to return to Your law, but they acted arrogantly and did not obey Your commandments. They sinned against Your judgments, which, if a person does, they will live by them. Stubbornly, they turned their backs, stiffened their necks, and would not listen. 30 For many years, You were patient with them. You warned them by Your Spirit through Your prophets, yet they would not listen. So You gave them into the hands of the peoples of the lands. 31 Still, in Your great mercies, You did not utterly destroy them or abandon them, for You are a gracious and merciful God. 32 Now therefore, our God, the great, mighty, and awesome God who keeps His covenant and steadfast love, do not let the hardship that has come upon us—on our kings, leaders, priests, prophets, ancestors, and on all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today—seem insignificant to You. 33 You are righteous in all that has happened to us, because You have acted faithfully while we have acted wickedly. 34 Our kings, leaders, priests, and ancestors did not obey Your law or pay attention to Your commandments and warnings You gave them. 35 Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying Your abundant goodness and the spacious, fertile land You gave them, they did not serve You or turn from their evil deeds. 36 Here we are today, slaves in the land You gave to our ancestors so they could enjoy its fruit and its goodness—here we are, slaves in it!
- Job 34:6 : 6 Though I am innocent, I am counted a liar; my wound is incurable, though I have committed no offense.
- Job 34:29 : 29 When He gives quietness, who can condemn? When He hides His face, who can behold Him? Yet He watches over both nation and man alike.
- Isa 1:4-5 : 4 Woe to a sinful nation, a people loaded down with guilt, offspring of evildoers, children who act corruptly! They have abandoned the LORD, spurned the Holy One of Israel, and turned their backs on Him. 5 Why will you still be struck down? Why do you continue to rebel? Every head is sick, and every heart is faint.
- Isa 1:21-24 : 21 How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She was full of justice; righteousness once dwelt in her, but now murderers. 22 Your silver has become dross, your wine is diluted with water. 23 Your rulers are rebellious and companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the fatherless, and the widow's case never comes before them. 24 Therefore, this is the declaration of the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: "I will gain relief from My adversaries and avenge Myself on My enemies.
- Isa 5:2 : 2 He dug it and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a tower in its center and also carved out a winepress in it. He hoped it would produce good grapes, but it yielded only wild ones.
- Isa 30:13-14 : 13 'this sin will become for you like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses suddenly, in an instant.' 14 'Its collapse will be like that of a jar shattered into pieces so small that no fragment can be used to scoop fire from the hearth or draw water from a cistern.'
- Isa 59:1-4 : 1 Look, the arm of the LORD is not too weak to save, nor is His ear too dull to hear. 2 But your iniquities have created a divide between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear. 3 For your hands are stained with blood, and your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken falsehood, and your tongue mutters injustice. 4 No one calls for justice, and no one pleads with integrity. They rely on empty words and speak lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to iniquity.
- Isa 59:12-15 : 12 For our transgressions are multiplied before You, and our sins testify against us. Indeed, our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities. 13 We have rebelled and denied the LORD; we have turned away from following our God. We speak of oppression and revolt, conceiving lies and uttering them from the heart. 14 Justice is driven back, and righteousness stands far off, for truth has stumbled in the streets, and honesty cannot enter. 15 Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey. The LORD saw this and was displeased, for there was no justice.
- Jer 2:19 : 19 Your own wickedness will discipline you; your backslidings will rebuke you. Consider and see how evil and bitter it is for you to forsake the LORD your God and to have no fear of me,” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
- Jer 2:28-30 : 28 But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them arise and save you in your time of trouble, if they can. For as many as your cities are your gods, Judah. 29 Why do you bring charges against me? You have all rebelled against me,” declares the LORD. 30 In vain I have struck your children; they accepted no discipline. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion.
- Jer 5:6-9 : 6 Therefore, a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the wilderness will ravage them, and a leopard is watching their cities. Anyone who goes out will be torn apart, because their transgressions are many and their backslidings are numerous. 7 How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken Me and sworn by false gods. I satisfied them, but they committed adultery and gathered at the houses of prostitutes. 8 They were like well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for his neighbor's wife. 9 Should I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord. Should I not take vengeance on a nation like this?
- Jer 5:25-31 : 25 Your iniquities have diverted these blessings, and your sins have withheld good things from you. 26 Among My people are wicked men. They lie in wait like those who set traps; they set deadly snares to catch people. 27 Like a cage full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit. Because of this, they have become great and rich. 28 They have grown fat and sleek. They excel in evil deeds; they do not defend the rights of the fatherless so they might prosper, nor do they uphold the cause of the needy. 29 Should I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord. Should I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this? 30 A terrible and shocking thing has happened in the land: 31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority. And My people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?
- Jer 6:6-7 : 6 For this is what the Lord of Hosts says: Cut down trees and build a siege ramp against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; it is filled with oppression. 7 As a well keeps its water fresh, so she keeps her wickedness fresh. Violence and destruction are heard within her; continually before me, there are sickness and wounds.
- Jer 6:13 : 13 For from the least to the greatest, all are greedy for unjust gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.
- Jer 7:8-9 : 8 But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless. 9 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known, 10 and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my name, and say, ‘We are safe,’ only to go on doing all these detestable things? 11 Has this house, which bears my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it,’ declares the LORD.
- Jer 9:1-9 : 1 If only I had a place to stay in the wilderness, a travelers' shelter, so that I might leave my people and go away from them. For they are all adulterers, a gathering of traitors. 2 They bend their tongues like a bow to shoot lies, not for truth do they grow strong in the land; they go from one evil to another, and they do not know me, declares the Lord. 3 Beware of your neighbor; do not trust even a brother. Every brother utterly deceives, and every friend spreads slander. 4 Each one deceives his neighbor, and they do not speak the truth. They have trained their tongues to speak lies and exhaust themselves with wrongdoing. 5 You live in the midst of deceit, and because of deceit, they refuse to know me, declares the Lord. 6 Therefore, this is what the Lord of Hosts says: Behold, I will refine them and test them, for what else can I do because of the sin of my people? 7 Their tongues are a sharpened arrow; deceit pours from their mouths. They speak peace to their neighbor, but in their hearts, they set up an ambush. 8 Should I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord. Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this? 9 I will raise weeping and wailing for the mountains and a dirge for the pastures in the wilderness, because they are burned up and desolate; no one passes through, and cattle cannot be heard anymore—birds of the sky and animals alike have fled and are gone.
- Jer 11:13 : 13 For your gods, Judah, are as numerous as your cities; and the altars you have set up to the shameful thing, altars to burn incense to Baal, are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.
- Jer 15:18 : 18 Why has my pain become perpetual, and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will You indeed be to me like a deceptive stream, waters that are unreliable?
