Når Herren din Gud utrydder folkene hvis land Herren din Gud gir deg, og du tar deres sted og bor i byene og husene deres;

When Yahweh your God shall cut off the nations, whose land Yahweh your God gives you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses;

skal du skille ut tre byer i ditt land, som Herren din Gud gir deg til eiendom.

you shall set apart three cities for you in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.

Du skal lage veier, og dele landet som Herren din Gud gir deg til å eie, i tre deler, slik at enhver drapsmann kan flykte dit.

You shall prepare you the way, and divide the borders of your land, which Yahweh your God causes you to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee there.

Dette er tilfelle for drapsmannen som kan flykte dit og leve: den som dreper sin neste uten forgående hat, uten å ha hatt noe mot ham tidligere;

This is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, and didn't hate him in time past;

som når en mann går ut i skogen med sin neste for å hugge ved, og han hogger med øksen for å felle treet, og øksehodet løsner fra skaftet og treffer hans neste slik at han dør; han kan flykte til en av disse byene og leve:

as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand fetches a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle, and lights on his neighbor, so that he dies; he shall flee to one of these cities and live:

for at blodhevneren ikke skal forfølge drapsmannen i sin hete vrede og slå ham i hjel, selv om han ikke fortjente døden, da han ikke hatet ham tidligere.

lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he didn't hate him in time past.

Derfor befaler jeg deg å sette av tre byer for deg.

Therefore I command you, saying, You shall set apart three cities for you.

Hvis Herren din Gud utvider dine grenser, slik han har sverget til dine fedre, og gir deg hele landet som han lovet å gi dine fedre;

If Yahweh your God enlarge your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and give you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers;

dersom du holder alle hans bud som jeg pålegger deg i dag, å elske Herren din Gud, og alltid gå på hans veier; da skal du legge til tre byer til, foruten disse tre:

if you shall keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you this day, to love Yahweh your God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shall you add three cities more for you, besides these three:

for at uskyldig blod ikke skal bli utøst i ditt land som Herren din Gud gir deg i arv, og på den måte påføre deg skyld.

that innocent blood not be shed in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be on you.

Men hvis en mann hater sin neste og ligger i bakhold for ham, reiser seg mot ham og dreper ham, og han flykter til en av disse byene;

But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and strike him mortally so that he dies, and he flee into one of these cities;

da skal byens eldste sende for å hente ham derfra, og gi ham i blodhevnerens hånd, så han kan dø.

then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

Du skal ikke ha medlidenhet med ham, men fjerne uskyldig blod fra Israel, slik at det går deg godt.

Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

Du skal ikke flytte din nabos grensesteiner, som forfedrene har satt på din eiendom som du skal arve, i landet som Herren din Gud gir deg til eiendom.

You shall not remove your neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit, in the land that Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.

Et enkelt vitne skal ikke stå frem mot en mann for noen synd eller overtredelse som han har begått; men ved to eller tre vitners utsagn skal saken avgjøres.

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.

Hvis et falskt vitne står frem mot noen for å vitne om urett;

If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrong-doing,

da skal begge mennene det gjelder, stå fremfor Herren, for prestene og dommerne som er den gang;

then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Yahweh, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days;

og dommerne skal undersøke nøye, og hvis vitnet er et falskt vitne, som har vitnet falskt mot sin bror;

and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother;

da skal dere gjøre mot ham som han hadde planlagt å gjøre mot sin bror. Slik skal dere fjerne det onde fra blant dere.

then shall you do to him, as he had thought to do to his brother: so shall you put away the evil from the midst of you.

De andre skal høre det og frykte, og videre ikke gjøre noe slikt ondt blant dere.

Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of you.

Dere skal ikke vise medlidenhet: liv for liv, øye for øye, tann for tann, hånd for hånd, fot for fot.

Your eyes shall not pity; life [shall go] for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
