After Abimelech, Tola, the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to deliver Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.

2 Han dømte Israel i tjuetre år, og døde og ble gravlagt i Shamir.

Tola judged Israel for twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.

3 Etter ham stod Jair, gileaditten, frem. Han dømte Israel i tjueto år.

After him, Jair the Gileadite arose and judged Israel for twenty-two years.

4 Han hadde tretti sønner som red på tretti esler, og de hadde tretti byer som de kalte Havvot-Jair, helt til denne dag i landet Gilead.

He had thirty sons, who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty towns, which are called Havvoth-Jair to this day, in the land of Gilead.

Then Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, the Ammonites, and the Philistines. They abandoned the LORD and did not serve Him.

7 Herrens vrede ble opptent mot Israel, og han overgav dem i filisternes og Ammons barns hender.

So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites.

8 De undertrykte og knuste israelittene det året, og i atten år undertrykte de alle israelittene på andre siden av Jordan i Amorittenes land i Gilead.

They crushed and oppressed the Israelites that year. For eighteen years, they oppressed all the Israelites who were on the east side of the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

9 Ammons barn krysset også Jordan for å kjempe mot Juda, Benjamin og Efraims land. Israel var i stor nød.

The Ammonites also crossed over the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was greatly distressed.

10 Da ropte israelittene til Herren og sa: «Vi har syndet mot deg fordi vi har forlatt vår Gud og tjent Baalene.»

Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, saying, 'We have sinned against You, for we have abandoned our God and served the Baals.'

11 Herren sa til israelittene: «Har jeg ikke reddet dere fra egypterne, amorittene, Ammons barn og filisterne?

The LORD said to the Israelites, 'Did I not rescue you from Egypt, the Amorites, the Ammonites, and the Philistines?

12 Sidonerne, Amalek og Maon undertrykte dere også, og da ropte dere til meg, og jeg reddet dere fra deres hender.

'And when the Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to Me, I rescued you from their hands.'

13 Men dere har forlatt meg og tjent andre guder. Derfor vil jeg ikke lenger frelse dere.

'But you have forsaken Me and served other gods. Therefore, I will no longer rescue you.'

14 Gå og rop til de gudene dere har valgt. La dem redde dere i deres nød.»

'Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you in your time of trouble!'

15 Israelittene sa til Herren: «Vi har syndet. Gjør med oss som du synes er best; men redd oss nå, vi ber deg.»

The Israelites said to the LORD, 'We have sinned. Do to us whatever seems good to You, but please save us today.'

16 De fjernet de fremmede gudene fra seg og tjente Herren. Da ble hans sjel fylt med medlidenhet over Israels nød.

So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.

17 Da var Ammons barn samlet og slo leir i Gilead, mens israelittene samlet seg og slo leir i Mispa.

The Ammonites were called together and encamped in Gilead, while the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.

18 Folket, Gileads ledere, sa til hverandre: «Hvem vil begynne å kjempe mot Ammons barn? Han skal være leder for alle Gileads innbyggere.»

The people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another, 'Who is the man who will begin the fight against the Ammonites? He shall be the leader for all the inhabitants of Gilead.'
