1 Jefta, gileaditten, var en mektig kriger. Han var sønn av en kvinne som var prostituert, og Gilead var hans far.

Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was his father.

2 Gileads kone fødte ham sønner, og da de vokste opp, drev de Jefta bort og sa: «Du skal ikke arve noe blant vår fars familie, for du er sønn av en annen kvinne.»

Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and when they grew up, they drove Jephthah away, saying, 'You will have no inheritance in our father's house because you are the son of another woman.'

3 Så flyktet Jefta bort fra brødrene sine og bosatte seg i landet Tob. Der samlet det seg en flokk foraktede menn rundt ham, og de fulgte ham.

So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob. Men who were worthless gathered around Jephthah and went out with him.

4 Noen tid senere førte ammonittene krig mot Israel.

After some time, the Ammonites made war against Israel.

5 Da ammonittene angrep Israel, gikk Gileads eldste for å hente Jefta fra landet Tob.

When the Ammonites fought against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.

6 De sa til Jefta: «Kom og bli vår leder, så vi kan kjempe mot ammonittene.»

They said to Jephthah, 'Come and be our leader so we can fight against the Ammonites.'

7 Men Jefta sa til Gileads eldste: «Var det ikke dere som hatet meg og drev meg bort fra min fars hus? Hvorfor kommer dere til meg nå når dere er i nød?»

But Jephthah said to them, 'Didn’t you hate me and drive me out of my father’s house? Why do you come to me now when you’re in trouble?'

8 De eldste i Gilead svarte Jefta: «Det er derfor vi nå vender tilbake til deg, så du kan følge med oss og kjempe mot ammonittene og bli leder for alle som bor i Gilead.»

The elders of Gilead replied, 'That is why we have now turned to you. Come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.'

9 Jefta sa til Gileads eldste: «Hvis dere henter meg tilbake for å kjempe mot ammonittene og Herren gir dem i mine hender, skal jeg da virkelig bli leder for dere?»

Jephthah answered, 'If you bring me back to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gives them to me, will I really become your head?'

10 Gileads eldste sa til Jefta: «Herren er vårt vitne. Vi skal gjøre som du sier.»

The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'The Lord is our witness; we will certainly do as you say.'

11 Jefta dro da med Gileads eldste, og folket satte ham til leder og kommandør over dem. Jefta førte fram alle sine ord for Herren i Mispa.

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their head and commander. Jephthah repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.

12 Jefta sendte budbringere til ammonittenes konge og spurte: «Hva har jeg gjort mot deg siden du har kommet for å kjempe mot mitt land?»

Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, asking, 'What do you have against me that you have come to fight against my land?'

13 Ammonittenes konge svarte Jeftas budbringere: «Israel tok mitt land da de kom opp fra Egypt, fra Arnon til Jabbok og til Jordan. Gi nå landet fredelig tilbake.»

The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, 'When Israel came out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok and as far as the Jordan. Now return it peacefully.'

14 Jefta sendte igjen budbringere til ammonittenes konge

Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the Ammonites,

15 og sa: «Slik sier Jefta: Israel tok verken Moabs land eller ammonittenes land.

Jephthah said to him, 'This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites.'

16 Da Israel dro opp fra Egypt, vandret de i ørkenen til Sivsjøen og kom til Kadesj.

For when they came up from Egypt, Israel traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and arrived at Kadesh.

17 Israel sendte budbringere til kongen i Edom og sa: ‘La oss få gå gjennom ditt land.’ Men kongen i Edom ville ikke høre. De sendte også bud til kongen i Moab, men han nektet. Så ble Israel værende i Kadesj.

Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, 'Please let us pass through your land,' but the king of Edom would not listen. They also sent to the king of Moab, but he refused. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.

18 De vandret så gjennom ørkenen, rundt landet Edom og landet Moab, og kom til øst for Moab. De slo leir på den andre siden av Arnon, men gikk ikke inn i Moabs område, for Arnon er Moabs grense.

Then they journeyed through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab. They camped on the other side of the Arnon but did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

19 Så sendte Israel budbringere til Sihon, amorittkongen i Hesjbon, og sa: ‘La oss få dra gjennom ditt land til vårt sted.’

Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who was king of Heshbon, and said to him, 'Let us pass through your land to our destination.'

20 Men Sihon stolte ikke på Israel, så han samlet hele sitt folk, slo leir i Jahas og kjempet mot Israel.

But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his land. Instead, he gathered all his people, camped at Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

21 Herren, Israels Gud, overgav Sihon og hele hans folk i Israels hånd, og de slo dem. Så tok Israel hele landet til amorittene som bodde der.

The Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into Israel’s hand, and they defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that territory.

22 De tok hele området til amorittene, fra Arnon til Jabbok og fra ørkenen til Jordan.

They took possession of the entire region of the Amorites, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.

23 Så er det Herren, Israels Gud, som drev bort amorittene foran sitt folk Israel. Og nå vil du drive dem bort?

Now the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites before His people Israel. Would you now take possession of it?

24 Holder du ikke fast på det din gud Kemosj gir deg? På samme måte holder vi fast på alt Herren vår Gud har gitt oss.

Do you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, we will take possession of whatever the Lord our God has driven out before us.

25 Er du bedre enn Balak, Sippors sønn, Moabs konge? Har han noen gang ført strid eller kjempet mot Israel?

Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive or fight against Israel?

26 I tre hundre år har Israel bodd i Hesjbon og dens småbyer, i Aroer og dens småbyer og i alle byene langs Arnons bredder. Hvorfor har dere ikke tatt disse områdene tilbake i løpet av den tiden?

While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns along the Arnon for three hundred years, why didn’t you recover them during that time?

27 Jeg har ikke syndet mot deg, men du gjør meg urett ved å føre krig mot meg. La Herren, dommeren, dømme i dag mellom Israel og ammonittene.

I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. May the Lord, the Judge, judge today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.

28 Men ammonittenes konge brydde seg ikke om ordene Jefta hadde sendt ham.

But the king of the Ammonites would not listen to the message Jephthah sent to him.

29 Herrens Ånd kom over Jefta. Han dro gjennom Gilead og Manasse, passerte Mispa i Gilead og gikk videre mot ammonittene.

Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and he went on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.

30 Jefta avga et løfte til Herren og sa: «Hvis du gir ammonittene i mine hender,

And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: 'If you give the Ammonites into my hands,

31 da skal det som først kommer ut av dørene i mitt hus for å møte meg, når jeg vender tilbake i fred fra ammonittene, til Herren, være Herrens, og jeg vil ofre det som et brennoffer.»

whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites will belong to the Lord, and I will offer it as a burnt offering.'

32 Jefta dro så mot ammonittene og kjempet mot dem. Herren gav dem i hans hånd.

Then Jephthah crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands.

33 Han slo dem fra Aroer til Minnit—tjue byer—og til Abel-Keramim. Det var et stort nederlag. Ammonittene ble ydmyket for Israels barn.

He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith and as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued the Ammonites.

34 Da Jefta kom hjem til Mispa, gikk datteren hans ut for å møte ham med tamburiner og dans. Hun var hans eneste barn. Han hadde ingen sønner eller døtre utenom henne.

When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, there was his daughter, coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing. She was his only child; he had no son or daughter besides her.

35 Da han så henne, rev han klærne sine og sa: «Å, min datter! Du har brakt meg i stor nød og ulykke, for jeg har gitt et løfte til Herren, og jeg kan ikke trekke det tilbake.»

When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, 'Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me to my knees and made me miserable, for I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.'

36 Hun svarte: «Min far, hvis du har gitt et løfte til Herren, så gjør med meg som du har lovet, siden Herren har gitt deg hevn over dine fiender, ammonittene.»

She said to him, 'My father, you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, since the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites.'

37 Så sa hun til sin far: «Gi meg denne tillatelsen: La meg få to måneder, så jeg kan gå opp i fjellene og gråte over min jomfrustand sammen med mine venninner.»

She also said to her father, 'Let me do this one thing: Allow me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends because I will never marry.'

38 Han sa: «Gå.» Og han sendte henne bort for to måneder. Hun og venninnene hennes gikk opp i fjellene og gråt over at hun måtte forbli jomfru.

He said, 'Go,' and he sent her away for two months. She and her friends went to the hills and wept because she would never marry.

39 Da de to månedene var over, vendte hun tilbake til sin far, og han gjorde med henne som han hadde lovet i sitt løfte. Hun hadde aldri vært nær en mann. Og det ble en skikk i Israel,

After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin. From this, it became a custom in Israel

40 at Israels døtre hvert år dro ut for å sørge over Jeftas datter, fire dager hvert år.

Each year the daughters of Israel would go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
