Verse 1

Listen to this word that I am raising against you, a lamentation, O house of Israel.

Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

Verse 2

She has fallen, never to rise again—the virgin Israel; she is deserted on her land, with no one to lift her up.

The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

Verse 3

For this is what the Lord God says: The city that marches out a thousand will have a hundred left, and the one that goes out a hundred will have ten left for the house of Israel.

For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

Verse 4

For this is what the Lord says to the house of Israel: Seek me and live.

For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

Verse 5

Do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, and do not cross over to Beersheba; for Gilgal will surely go into exile, and Bethel will become nothing but trouble.

But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

Verse 6

Seek the Lord and live, or he will rush like fire against the house of Joseph; it will consume everything, and there will be no one to quench it for Bethel.

Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

Verse 7

You who turn justice to bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground—

Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

Verse 8

He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns deep darkness into morning and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth—the Lord is his name.

Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

Verse 9

He flashes destruction upon the mighty and brings ruin upon the fortified city.

That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

Verse 10

They hate the one who reproves in the gate and despise the one who speaks with honesty.

They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

Verse 11

Therefore, because you trample on the poor and exact a grain tax from them, though you have built houses of cut stone, you will not live in them; though you have planted delightful vineyards, you will not drink their wine.

Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

Verse 12

For I know your many transgressions and your mighty sins: oppressing the righteous, taking bribes, and turning aside the needy at the gate.

For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

Verse 13

Therefore, the prudent person will keep silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.

Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

Verse 14

Seek good and not evil so that you may live, and so the Lord, the God of Hosts, will be with you, just as you have said.

Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

Verse 15

Hate evil and love good; establish justice at the gate. Perhaps the Lord, the God of Hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Verse 16

Therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of Hosts, the Lord says: There will be wailing in all the open squares, and in all the streets they will say, 'Woe, woe!' They will summon the farmer to mourning and professional mourners to lamentation.

Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

Verse 17

In all the vineyards there will be wailing, for I will pass through your midst—this is what the Lord has declared.

And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD.

Verse 18

Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you desire it? The day of the Lord will be darkness and not light.

Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

Verse 19

It will be as if a man flees from a lion, only to be met by a bear; or as if he enters his house, rests his hand on the wall, and a snake bites him.

As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

Verse 20

Won’t the day of the Lord be darkness and not light, gloom with no brightness in it?

Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

Verse 21

I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no pleasure in your solemn assemblies.

I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

Verse 22

Even if you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will not regard your fattened peace offerings.

Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

Verse 23

Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the melody of your harps.

Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

Verse 24

But let justice flow like a river, and righteousness like a never-ending stream.

But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Verse 25

Did you bring me sacrifices and grain offerings during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?

Verse 26

You have carried Sikkuth, your king, and Kiyyun, your idols, the stars of your gods that you made for yourselves.

But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.

Verse 27

Therefore, I will send you into exile beyond Damascus, says the Lord, the God of Hosts is his name.

Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.
