When the seventh month came, and the Israelites were in their cities, the people gathered together as one in Jerusalem.

It is a solemn assembly; you must not do any regular work. 37 These are the appointed festivals of the Lord that you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies for presenting fire offerings to the Lord—burnt offerings, grain offerings, sacrifices, and drink offerings, each on its designated day— 38 in addition to the Lord's Sabbaths, your gifts, all your vow offerings, and all your freewill offerings you give to the Lord. 39 However, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather in the produce of the land, you must celebrate the Lord's Festival for seven days. The first day shall be a day of rest, and the eighth day shall also be a day of rest. 40 On the first day, you shall take for yourselves the fruit of splendid trees, palm branches, leafy tree boughs, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. 41 You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord for seven days each year. This is a perpetual statute for your generations; you shall observe it in the seventh month. 42 You shall live in booths for seven days. Every native-born Israelite is to dwell in booths, 43 so that your generations may know that I made the Israelites dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God. 44 So Moses declared to the Israelites the appointed festivals of the Lord.
