    1Now Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to observe the women of the land.

    2And Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He seized her, lay with her, and violated her.

    3But his heart was deeply attached to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.

    4Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."

    5Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah, but his sons were in the fields with the livestock, so Jacob kept silent until they came back.

    6Then Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him.

    7Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields when they heard, and the men were grieved and very angry, because this outrageous act had been done in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter—something that should not be done.

    8Hamor spoke with them, saying, "My son Shechem has set his heart on your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
