Verse 1

Then the entire assembly arose and brought Him to Pilate.

And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

Verse 2

They began to accuse Him, saying, 'We found this man misleading our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a King.'

And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

Verse 3

So Pilate asked Him, 'Are You the King of the Jews?' Jesus answered, 'You say so.'

And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

Verse 4

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, 'I find no guilt in this man.'

Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

Verse 5

But they insisted, 'He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning in Galilee and coming all the way here.'

And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

Verse 6

When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean.

When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

Verse 7

Realizing that He was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

Verse 8

When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see Him. He had heard about Him and hoped to see Him perform a sign.

And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

Verse 9

Herod questioned Him at length, but Jesus gave him no answer.

Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

Verse 10

The chief priests and the scribes stood there vehemently accusing Him.

And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

Verse 11

Then Herod, along with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him. They dressed Him in a splendid robe and sent Him back to Pilate.

And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

Verse 12

That very day, Herod and Pilate became friends, for previously they had been enemies.

And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

Verse 13

Pilate then called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people.

And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

Verse 14

and said to them, 'You brought this man to me as one who is misleading the people. Now look, after examining Him in your presence, I have found no basis for your charges against Him.

Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

Verse 15

No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. Look, He has done nothing deserving death.

No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

Verse 16

Therefore, I will punish Him and then release Him.

I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

Verse 17

(He was obligated to release one prisoner to them at the feast.)

For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

Verse 18

But they all cried out together, 'Away with this man, and release Barabbas to us!'

And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

Verse 19

(He had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

Verse 20

Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again.

Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

Verse 21

But they kept shouting, 'Crucify Him! Crucify Him!'

But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

Verse 22

For the third time he asked them, 'Why? What evil has this man done? I have found no reason for a death sentence. Therefore, I will punish Him and release Him.'

And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

Verse 23

But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And their voices prevailed.

And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

Verse 24

So Pilate decided to grant their demand.

And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

Verse 25

He released the one they asked for, who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he handed Jesus over to their will.

And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Verse 26

As they led Him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and they laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.

And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

Verse 27

A large crowd of people followed Him, including women who were mourning and lamenting Him.

And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

Verse 28

But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

Verse 29

For look, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'

For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Verse 30

Then they will say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'

Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

Verse 31

For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?

For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

Verse 32

Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Him.

And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

Verse 33

When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals—one on His right and the other on His left.

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Verse 34

And Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.' Then they divided His garments by casting lots.

Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Verse 35

The people stood watching, and the rulers even mocked Him, saying, 'He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'

And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

Verse 36

The soldiers also mocked Him. They approached and offered Him sour wine,

And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

Verse 37

and said, 'If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!'

And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

Verse 38

Above Him was written an inscription: This is the King of the Jews.

And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Verse 39

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him, saying, 'Aren't You the Christ? Save Yourself and us!'

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

Verse 40

But the other criminal rebuked him, saying, 'Don't you fear God, since you are under the same sentence?

But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

Verse 41

'And we are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.'

And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

Verse 42

Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.'

And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

Verse 43

And Jesus replied, 'Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.'

And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Verse 44

It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

Verse 45

The sun was darkened, and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

Verse 46

Then Jesus called out with a loud voice, 'Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.' And when He had said this, He breathed His last.

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Verse 47

When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, 'Surely this was a righteous man.'

Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

Verse 48

And all the crowds who had gathered to witness this event, seeing what had happened, went home beating their chests.

And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

Verse 49

But all those who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

Verse 50

Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, who was a good and righteous man.

And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

Verse 51

(He had not consented to their decision and action.) He came from Arimathea, a town of the Jews, and he was waiting for the kingdom of God.

The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

Verse 52

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

Verse 53

Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock, where no one had yet been laid.

And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

Verse 54

It was the Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

Verse 55

The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how His body was placed in it.

And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

Verse 56

Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
