I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. 14 I will abandon the remnant of My inheritance and give them into the hands of their enemies. It shall also be used to buy timber and quarried stone for repairing the house. 7 But no accounting shall be demanded from the workers for the silver that is given to them, for they are acting faithfully. 8 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD.” Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, who read it. 9 Shaphan the scribe then went to the king and reported to him, saying, “Your servants have removed the silver that was found in the house and have handed it over to those who oversee the work on the house of the LORD.” 10 Shaphan the scribe also told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it aloud to the king. 11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes. 12 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah, the king’s servant, saying, 13 Go and inquire of the LORD for me, for the people, and for all of Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is the LORD’s wrath that is kindled against us because our ancestors did not obey the words of this book by doing everything written concerning us. 14 So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum, son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, the keeper of the wardrobe. She was living in Jerusalem in the second district. They spoke to her. 15 She said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Say to the man who sent you to me, 16 ‘Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am bringing disaster on this place and on its inhabitants—all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read—’ 17 ‘Because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, provoking Me to anger with all the works of their hands. Therefore, My wrath is kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.’ 18 As for the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the LORD, you shall say to him: ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Regarding the words you have heard, 19 Because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and its inhabitants—that they would become a desolation and a curse—and because you tore your clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard you, declares the LORD. 20 Therefore, behold, I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster that I am going to bring upon this place.’” Then they brought back word to the king. 1 The king sent messengers, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 2 The king went up to the house of the Lord, along with all the men of Judah, all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the prophets, and all the people, from the youngest to the oldest. There, he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the house of the Lord. 3 The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord to follow the Lord, to keep His commandments, His testimonies, and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to uphold the words of the covenant written in this book. All the people joined in the covenant. 4 The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests of the second rank, and the gatekeepers to bring out of the temple of the Lord all the objects made for Baal, Asherah, and all the host of heaven. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and scattered their ashes on the graves of the people. 5 He also removed the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah, those who burned incense at the high places in the cities of Judah and in the areas around Jerusalem. He removed those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and the moon, the constellations, and all the host of heaven. 6 He brought out the Asherah pole from the house of the Lord to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem, burned it in the Kidron Valley, ground it to ashes, and threw the ashes on the graves of the common people. 7 He tore down the houses of the male cult prostitutes that were in the temple of the Lord, where the women wove coverings for Asherah. 8 He brought all the priests from the cities of Judah and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba. He also destroyed the high places at the gates—the one at the entrance of the Gate of Joshua, the governor of the city, which was on the left of the city gate. 9 However, the priests of the high places did not go up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem but ate unleavened bread among their fellow priests. 10 He defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, so no one could make his son or daughter pass through the fire to Molech. 11 He removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun at the entrance to the house of the Lord, near the room of Nathan-Melech, the eunuch, which was in the colonnades. He also burned the chariots of the sun with fire. 12 The king tore down the altars that were on the roof of Ahaz's upper chamber, the ones the kings of Judah had made. He also destroyed the altars that Manasseh had made in the two courtyards of the house of the Lord. He removed them from there, ground them to dust, and threw their dust into the Kidron Valley. 13 The king also defiled the high places east of Jerusalem, on the south of the Mount of Corruption, which Solomon, the king of Israel, had built for Ashtoreth, the detestable idol of the Sidonians, for Chemosh, the detestable idol of Moab, and for Milcom, the abomination of the Ammonites. 14 He smashed the sacred pillars to pieces, cut down the Asherah poles, and filled their places with human bones. 15 Even the altar at Bethel, the high place that Jeroboam son of Nebat had made, the one who caused Israel to sin—even that altar and the high place he tore down. He burned the high place, crushed it to dust, and burned the Asherah pole that was there. 16 Josiah turned, saw the graves that were on the hill, and sent men to take the bones from the graves. He burned them on the altar and defiled it according to the word of the LORD, as the man of God had proclaimed, who had foretold these things. 17 He asked, 'What is this monument that I see?’ The men of the city replied, 'It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and proclaimed these things that you have done to the altar at Bethel.' 18 He said, 'Leave it alone; let no one disturb his bones.' So they spared his bones, along with the bones of the prophet who had come from Samaria. 19 Josiah also removed all the shrines on the high places in the towns of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the LORD to anger. He did to them just as he had done at Bethel. 20 He slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem. 21 The king commanded all the people, 'Celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God as it is written in the Book of the Covenant.' 22 For no Passover like it had been observed since the days of the judges who ruled Israel, or throughout all the days of the kings of Israel and Judah. 23 But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the LORD in Jerusalem. 24 Josiah also removed the mediums, spiritists, household idols, images, and all the detestable things that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. He did this to fulfill the words of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of the LORD. 25 There was no king like him before, who turned to the LORD with all his heart, soul, and strength, according to all the Law of Moses, nor did any like him arise after him. 26 However, the LORD did not turn from the fierce anger that burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke Him to anger. 27 The LORD said, 'I will also remove Judah from my presence as I removed Israel. I will reject this city, Jerusalem, which I chose, and the temple about which I said, ‘My name shall be there.’' 28 The rest of the acts of Josiah, all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 29 During his reign, Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went to fight against the king of Assyria at the Euphrates River. King Josiah marched out to meet him, but Necho killed him at Megiddo when they faced each other. 30 His servants brought his body by chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah, anointed him, and made him king in place of his father.

They captured Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon. 12 When he was in distress, he sought the favor of the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his ancestors. 13 He prayed to Him, and the LORD was moved by his entreaty and heard his plea. He brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD is God. 14 Afterward, he rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David west of Gihon in the valley, as far as the entrance of the Fish Gate and surrounding the Ophel. He made it much higher. He also placed military commanders in all the fortified cities in Judah. 15 He removed the foreign gods and the image from the house of the LORD, and all the altars he had built on the hill of the house of the LORD and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside the city. 16 Then he restored the altar of the LORD and offered on it sacrifices of peace offerings and thanksgiving. And he commanded Judah to worship the LORD, the God of Israel. 17 However, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God. 18 The rest of the acts of Manasseh, including his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Israel. 19 His prayer and how God was moved by his plea, all his sins and unfaithfulness, the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and carved images before he humbled himself—all these are written in the records of the seers. 20 Manasseh rested with his fathers and was buried in his house. And his son Amon became king in his place. 21 Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. 22 He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon worshipped and served all the carved images that his father Manasseh had made. 23 But he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father Manasseh had humbled himself; instead, Amon increased his guilt. 24 Then his servants conspired against him and killed him in his own house. 25 But the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah king in his place. 1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for thirty-one years. 2 He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, walking in the ways of his forefather David. He did not turn aside to the right or to the left. 3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his ancestor David. In the twelfth year, he started to purify Judah and Jerusalem by removing the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved images, and the cast idols. 4 In his presence, they tore down the altars of the Baals, and he cut down the incense altars that were above them. He shattered the Asherah poles, the carved images, and the cast idols, crushing them into powder, and he scattered the dust over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 He burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and he purified Judah and Jerusalem. 6 He did the same in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in their ruins all around. 7 He tore down the altars and the Asherah poles, smashed the carved images into powder, and cut down all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem. 8 In the eighteenth year of his reign, to cleanse the land and the temple, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the city governor, and Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to restore the house of the LORD his God. 9 They went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought to the house of God, which the Levites, the gatekeepers, had collected from Manasseh, Ephraim, and the remnant of Israel, as well as all Judah, Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 They gave it into the hands of the supervisors of the work being done on the house of the LORD, who then gave it to the workmen repairing and restoring the temple. 11 They gave it to the craftsmen and builders to buy dressed stones, timber for joists, and beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had allowed to fall into ruin. 12 The men worked faithfully. Jahath and Obadiah, Levites from the descendants of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam from the descendants of Kohath supervised them. The Levites, all skilled musicians, also assisted in the work. 13 They were in charge of the laborers and oversaw all the workers involved in the various tasks. Some of the Levites served as scribes, officers, and gatekeepers. 14 While they were bringing out the money that had been brought to the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the scroll of the Law of the LORD written by Moses. 15 Hilkiah announced to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the scroll of the Law in the house of the LORD." He gave the scroll to Shaphan. 16 Shaphan took the scroll to the king and reported to him, saying, "We are carrying out everything that has been assigned to your servants. 17 They have collected the money that was found in the house of the LORD and have handed it over to the supervisors and workers in charge of the work." 18 Shaphan the scribe also told the king, "Hilkiah the priest has given me the scroll," and Shaphan read it aloud before the king. 19 When the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes in distress. 20 Then the king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah, the king's servant, saying: 21 "Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah about the words of this scroll that has been found. For great is the LORD's wrath that is poured out on us because our ancestors did not obey the words of the LORD by following everything written in this scroll." 22 So Hilkiah and those sent by the king went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, son of Hasrah, the keeper of the wardrobe. She was living in Jerusalem in the Second District, and they spoke with her there. 23 She said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 'This is what the LORD says: I am about to bring disaster on this place and its inhabitants, all the curses written in the book that was read in the presence of the king of Judah. 25 Because they have abandoned Me and burned incense to other gods, provoking Me to anger with all the works of their hands, My wrath will be poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.' 26 But to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the LORD, this is what you shall say to him: 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: 27 Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and its inhabitants, and because you tore your clothes and wept in My presence, I have heard you,' declares the LORD. 28 'Now I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am about to bring on this place and its inhabitants.'" So they brought back this message to the king. 29 Then the king sent and gathered all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 The king went up to the house of the LORD with all the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the Levites, and all the people, from the greatest to the least. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD. 31 The king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD, to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of the covenant written in this book. 32 He had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge themselves to it. So the inhabitants of Jerusalem acted according to the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors. 33 Josiah removed all the detestable idols from all the territories belonging to the Israelites, and he compelled everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign, they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the God of their ancestors. 1 Josiah celebrated the Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem, and they slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the first month. 2 He appointed the priests to their responsibilities and encouraged them in their service to the house of the LORD. 3 He said to the Levites, who instructed all Israel and were consecrated to the LORD: 'Put the holy ark in the house that Solomon son of David, king of Israel, built. You will no longer need to carry it on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.' 4 Prepare yourselves by your ancestral houses and divisions, according to the instructions written by David, king of Israel, and by his son Solomon. 5 Stand in the holy place by the divisions of your ancestral houses for your kinsmen, the people, and by the divisions of the Levites according to their families. 6 Slaughter the Passover lamb, consecrate yourselves, and prepare it for your brothers to carry out the word of the LORD given through Moses. 7 Josiah gave to the people, as offerings for Passover sacrifices, flocks of lambs and young goats numbering thirty thousand, as well as three thousand cattle; these came from the king's possessions. 8 His officers also contributed willingly to the people, the priests, and the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the officials in charge of the house of God, provided the priests with 2,600 Passover offerings and 300 cattle. 9 Conaniah, along with Shemaiah, Nethanel, his brothers, Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, the leaders of the Levites, gave the Levites 5,000 Passover sacrifices and 500 cattle. 10 When everything was ready, the priests stood in their places, and the Levites in their divisions, according to the king's command. 11 They slaughtered the Passover lambs, and the priests sprinkled the blood handed to them, while the Levites skinned the animals. 12 They set aside the burnt offerings to be distributed to the divisions of the ancestral families of the people, to offer them to the LORD as it is written in the Book of Moses; and they did the same with the cattle. 13 They roasted the Passover lambs over the fire according to the ordinance. They boiled the sacred offerings in pots, kettles, and pans, and served them quickly to all the people. 14 Afterward, they prepared portions for themselves and the priests, because the priests, descendants of Aaron, were busy offering the burnt offerings and fat portions until nightfall. So the Levites prepared portions for themselves and the priests, the descendants of Aaron. 15 The singers, the sons of Asaph, were at their stations as commanded by David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer. The gatekeepers were stationed at each gate and did not leave their posts, since their fellow Levites prepared their portions for them. 16 So all the service of the LORD was arranged that day to observe the Passover and to offer burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD, as commanded by King Josiah. 17 The Israelites who were present celebrated the Passover at that time, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days. 18 There had not been a Passover celebrated like this in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel had celebrated a Passover such as Josiah did with the priests, the Levites, all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 19 This Passover was observed in the eighteenth year of Josiah's reign. 20 After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, marched up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates. Josiah went out to meet him. 21 But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, 'What quarrel is there between you and me, king of Judah? I am not coming against you today but against the house with which I am at war. God has told me to hurry; so stop opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you.' 22 But Josiah refused to turn away from him. Instead, he disguised himself to engage him in battle. He did not heed the words of Neco, which were spoken at God's command. So he went to fight him in the valley of Megiddo. 23 The archers shot King Josiah, and he said to his servants, 'Take me away, for I am badly wounded.' 24 So his servants took him out of his chariot, put him in another chariot that he had, and brought him to Jerusalem. There he died and was buried in the tombs of his fathers. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. 25 Jeremiah composed laments for Josiah, and all the male and female singers have sung about Josiah in their laments to this day. These became a tradition in Israel and are written in the Laments. 26 The rest of the deeds of Josiah and his acts of devotion, as written in the Law of the LORD, 27 and his earlier and later deeds, are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
• Jer 1:2-3 : 2 The word of the LORD came to him during the reign of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 And it continued during the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem were exiled in the fifth month.
