They belonged to the divisions of the Levites. 19 Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his relatives, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of service, guarding the thresholds of the tent, as their ancestors had guarded the entrance to the camp of the Lord. 20 Phinehas son of Eleazar was the leader over them formerly, and the Lord was with him. 21 Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 22 The total number of those chosen as gatekeepers at the thresholds was 212. They were registered by their genealogies in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to their trusted office. 23 They and their descendants were assigned to guard the gates of the house of the Lord—the house of the tent—by rotations. 24 The gatekeepers were positioned on all four sides: east, west, north, and south. 25 Their relatives in their villages were required to come in for seven days at regular intervals to join them. 26 For these four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the chambers and the treasuries of the house of God because of their faithfulness. 27 They spent the night around the house of God because they were responsible for its guard and for opening it each morning. 28 Some of them were in charge of the vessels used in worship. They were responsible for bringing them in and taking them out by count. 29 Others of them were appointed over the furniture, all the sacred utensils, as well as the fine flour, wine, oil, incense, and spices. 30 Some of the priests prepared the mix of spices for the ointments. 31 Mattithiah, a Levite and the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with the task of preparing the flat cakes in faithfulness. 32 Some of the Kohathites, their relatives, were assigned to prepare the showbread every Sabbath. 33 These were the singers, heads of the families of the Levites, who lived in the chambers and were free from other duties, as they were engaged in their work day and night. 34 These were the heads of the Levite families, chiefs in their genealogies, and they lived in Jerusalem. 35 In Gibeon lived Jeiel, the father of Gibeon. They too lived alongside their relatives in Jerusalem. 39 Ner was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul, and Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal. 40 The son of Jonathan was Meribbaal, and Meribbaal was the father of Micah. 41 The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melech, and Tahrea. 42 Ahaz fathered Jarah, Jarah fathered Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri, and Zimri fathered Moza. 43 Moza fathered Binea, and Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son. 44 Azel had six sons, and their names were Azrikam, Bokru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.
