A man clothed in soft rayment? Beholde, they which are gorgeously appareled, & lyue delicately, are in kynges courtes. 26 But what went ye foorth to see? A prophete? Yea, I say to you, and more then a prophete. 27 This is he, of whom it is written: Beholde, I sende my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 28 For I say vnto you, among womens chyldren, is there not a greater prophete then Iohn Baptist. Neuerthesse, he that is lesse in the kyngdome of God, is greater then he. 29 And all the people, and the publicanes that hearde hym, iustified God, and were baptized with the baptisme of Iohn. 30 But the pharisees and lawyers despised the councel of God, agaynst them selues, and were not baptized of hym. 31 And the Lorde sayde: Whervnto shall I lyken the men of this generation? and what thyng are they lyke? 32 They are lyke vnto chyldren, sittyng in the market place, and crying one to another, and saying: We haue pyped vnto you, and ye haue not daunsed: We haue mourned to you, and ye haue not wept. 33 For Iohn Baptist came, neither eatyng bread nor drynkyng wyne, and ye say he hath the deuyll. 34 The sonne of man is come, and eateth and drynketh, and ye saye, beholde a gluttonous man, and an vnmeasurable drynker of wyne, a frende of publicanes and sinners. 35 And wisdome is iustified of all her chyldren.
