Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, Stay a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up; for he thought, Lest he also die like his brothers. So Tamar went and lived in her father's house.

24About three months later, it was told Judah, Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; moreover, she is pregnant by harlotry. Judah said, Bring her out, and let her be burned.
25As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law, saying, By the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant. She also said, Discern, please, whose these are—the signet, the bracelets, and the staff.
26Judah acknowledged them and said, She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son. And he never knew her again.
27When the time came for her to give birth, behold, there were twins in her womb.
5Yet again she conceived and bore a son, and named him Shelah; and he was at Chezib when she bore him.
6Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
7But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; so the LORD put him to death.
8Then Judah said to Onan, Go to your brother’s wife, marry her, and raise offspring for your brother.
9But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went to his brother’s wife, he spilled his seed on the ground, to avoid giving offspring to his brother.
10What he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD, so He put him to death also.

18And she had a garment of many colors upon her, for such robes were the king's daughters who were virgins clothed. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.
19And Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her garment of many colors that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.
20And Absalom her brother said to her, Has Amnon your brother been with you? But hold your peace now, my sister: he is your brother; do not consider this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house.
