Verse 1

Then Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

There they made him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him.

Then Mary took a pound of very costly spikenard ointment, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

Verse 4

Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray him, said,

Verse 5

Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor?

Verse 6

This he said, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money bag, and used to take what was put in it.

Then Jesus said, Leave her alone; she has kept this for the day of my burial.

For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.

For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

Verse 9

A large crowd of the Jews then knew that he was there; and they came, not only for Jesus' sake, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

Verse 10

But the chief priests resolved that they might also put Lazarus to death,

But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

Verse 11

because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

Verse 12

On the next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

Verse 13

took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, and cried, Hosanna! Blessed is the King of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord.

Verse 14

And Jesus, when he had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written,

Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.

Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

Verse 16

These things his disciples did not understand at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that they had done these things to him.

These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

Verse 17

The people who were with him when he called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness.

The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

Verse 18

For this reason the crowd also met him, because they heard that he had done this miracle.

For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

Verse 19

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Do you see that you are accomplishing nothing? Look, the world has gone after him.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

Verse 20

Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast.

Verse 21

Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

Verse 22

Philip went and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

Verse 23

But Jesus answered them, saying, The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.

And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

Verse 24

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

Verse 25

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Verse 26

If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, my Father will honor him.

If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

Verse 27

Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? But for this cause I came to this hour.

Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

Verse 28

Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.

Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

Verse 29

The people who stood by and heard it said that it thundered; others said, An angel has spoken to him.

The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

Verse 30

Jesus answered and said, This voice did not come because of me, but for your sakes.

Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

Verse 31

Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

Verse 32

And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

Verse 33

This he said, signifying what death he would die.

The people answered him, We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can you say, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

Verse 35

Then Jesus said to them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; for he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

Verse 36

While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be children of light. These things Jesus spoke, and departed and hid himself from them.

While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

Verse 37

But although he had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in him,

But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

Verse 38

that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

Verse 39

Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again,

Verse 40

He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts and turn, and I should heal them.

He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

Verse 41

These things Isaiah said when he saw his glory and spoke of him.

These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Verse 42

Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;

Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

Verse 43

for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

Verse 44

Then Jesus cried out and said, He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.

Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

Verse 45

And he who sees me sees him who sent me.

And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

Verse 46

I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not remain in darkness.

I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

Verse 47

And if anyone hears my words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

Verse 48

He who rejects me and does not receive my words has that which judges him: the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Verse 49

For I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me gave me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

Verse 50

And I know that his command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told me, so I speak.

And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
