Verse 1

Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

Verse 2

And supper being ended, the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;

Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God, and was going to God;

He rose from supper, laid aside his garments, took a towel, and girded himself.

After that, he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

Then he came to Simon Peter, and Peter said to him, Lord, are you washing my feet?

Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

Verse 7

Jesus answered and said to him, What I do you do not know now, but you shall know afterward.

Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

Verse 8

Peter said to him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.

Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

Verse 9

Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

Verse 10

Jesus said to him, He who is washed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all.

Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

For he knew who would betray him; therefore he said, You are not all clean.

Verse 12

So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and sat down again, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you?

Verse 13

You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.

Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

Verse 14

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

Verse 15

For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

Verse 16

Truly, truly, I say to you, The servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

Verse 17

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

Verse 18

I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.

I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.

Verse 19

Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am he.

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

Verse 20

Truly, truly, I say to you, He who receives whomever I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Verse 21

When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray me.

When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

Verse 22

Then the disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke.

Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

Verse 23

Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom he spoke.

Then, leaning back on Jesus' breast, he said to him, Lord, who is it?

He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

Verse 26

Jesus answered, It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it. And having dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

Verse 27

Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, What you do, do quickly.

And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

Verse 28

Now no one at the table knew for what reason he said this to him.

Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

Verse 29

For some thought, because Judas had the money bag, that Jesus had said to him, Buy those things we need for the feast, or that he should give something to the poor.

For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

Verse 30

Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

Verse 31

Therefore, when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.

Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

Verse 32

If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him immediately.

If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

Verse 33

Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews, Where I am going, you cannot come, so now I say to you.

Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

Verse 34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Verse 35

By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Verse 36

Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you shall follow me afterward.

Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

Verse 37

Peter said to him, Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake.

Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

Verse 38

Jesus answered him, Will you lay down your life for my sake? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied me three times.

Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
