And the people departed. 6 And King Rehoboam consulted with the old men who stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do you advise that I should answer this people? 7 And they spoke to him, saying, If you will be a servant to this people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever. 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him, 9 and he said to them, What counsel do you give that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which your father put upon us lighter? 10 And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus shall you speak to this people who spoke to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter for us; thus shall you say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's waist. 11 And now, whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the counsel of the old men that they gave him, 14 and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke; my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15 Therefore the king did not listen to the people, for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform His word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 16 So when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents. 17 But as for the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, so that he died. Therefore King Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day. 20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had come again, they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel; there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only. 21 And when Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah with the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom back to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 23 Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, 24 Thus says the LORD, You shall not go up nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel. Return every man to his house, for this thing is from Me. Therefore they listened to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

Behold, I have sent you a present of silver and gold; come and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me. 20 So Benhadad listened to King Asa, and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, and struck Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maachah, and all Cinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali. 21 And it came to pass, when Baasha heard of it, he stopped building Ramah, and stayed in Tirzah. 22 Then King Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah; none was exempted, and they took away the stones and timber of Ramah, which Baasha had used to build it. King Asa used them to build Geba of Benjamin, and Mizpah. 23 The rest of all the acts of Asa, all his might, all he did, and the cities he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Yet in his old age, he was diseased in his feet.

So they built and prospered. 8 And Asa had an army of men who carried shields and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, those who carried shields and drew bows, two hundred and eighty thousand: all these were mighty men of valor. 9 And Zerah the Ethiopian came against them with an army of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots, and came to Mareshah. 10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, 'LORD, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many, or with those who have no power; help us, O LORD our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God; let not man prevail against You.' 12 So the LORD struck the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. 13 And Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar, and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover, for they were destroyed before the LORD and before His army; and they carried away very much spoil. 14 And they struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the LORD came upon them, and they plundered all the cities, for there was very much spoil in them. 15 They also attacked the tents of cattle and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
