He said to his ministers,“Wasn’t it three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied to the king,“For sure, O king.” 25 He answered,“But I see four men, untied and walking around in the midst of the fire! No harm has come to them! And the appearance of the fourth is like that of a god!”

    12They observed a time of fasting and put Naboth in front of the people.

    13The two villains arrived and sat opposite him. Then the villains testified against Naboth right before the people, saying,“Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they dragged him outside the city and stoned him to death.

    14Then they reported to Jezebel,“Naboth has been stoned to death.”

    15When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab,“Get up, take possession of the vineyard Naboth the Jezreelite refused to sell you for silver, for Naboth is no longer alive; he’s dead.”

    16When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

    17The LORD’S message came to Elijah the Tishbite:

    18“Get up, go down and meet King Ahab of Israel who lives in Samaria. He is at the vineyard of Naboth; he has gone down there to take possession of it.

    19Say to him,‘This is what the LORD has said:“Haven’t you committed murder and taken possession of the property of the deceased?”’ Then say to him,‘This is what the LORD has said:“In the spot where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood they will also lick up your blood– yes, yours!”’”

    1Elijah Runs for His Life Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, including a detailed account of how he killed all the prophets with the sword.

    25(There had never been anyone like Ahab, who was firmly committed to doing evil in the sight of the LORD, urged on by his wife Jezebel.

    26‘“Know for sure that I saw the shed blood of Naboth and his sons yesterday,” says the LORD,“and that I will give you what you deserve right here in this plot of land,” says the LORD.’So now pick him up and throw him into this plot of land, just as in the LORD’s message.”

    12Jehoram received this letter from Elijah the prophet:“This is what the LORD God of your ancestor David says:‘You have not followed in the footsteps of your father Jehoshaphat and of King Asa of Judah,

    13but have instead followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel. You encouraged the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem to be unfaithful to the LORD, just as the family of Ahab does in Israel. You also killed your brothers, members of your father’s family, who were better than you.

    1Jehu Wipes Out Ahab’s Family Ahab had seventy sons living in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the leading officials of Jezreel and to the guardians of Ahab’s dynasty. This is what the letters said,

    2“You have with you the sons of your master, chariots and horses, a fortified city, and weapons. So when this letter arrives,

  • 4So Ahab went into his palace, bitter and angry that Naboth the Jezreelite had said,“I will not sell to you my ancestral inheritance.” He lay down on his bed, pouted, and would not eat.

  • 11Then Jehu killed all who were left of Ahab’s family in Jezreel, and all his nobles, close friends, and priests. He left no survivors.

  • 21Then the LORD told me about some men from Anathoth who were threatening to kill me. They had threatened,“Stop prophesying in the name of the LORD or we will kill you!”

  • 7You will destroy the family of your master Ahab. I will get revenge against Jezebel for the shed blood of my servants the prophets and for the shed blood of all the LORD’s servants.

  • 8While Jehu was dishing out punishment to Ahab’s family, he discovered the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s relatives who were serving Ahaziah and killed them.

  • 21They plotted against him and by royal decree stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD’s temple.

  • 1Ahaziah’s Reign The residents of Jerusalem made his youngest son Ahaziah king in his place, for the raiding party that invaded the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.

  • 6and all the elders of that city nearest the corpse must wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley.

  • 25When he finished offering the burnt sacrifice, Jehu ordered the royal guard and officers,“Come in and strike them down! Don’t let any escape!” So the royal guard and officers struck them down with the sword and left their bodies lying there. Then they entered the inner sanctuary of the temple of Baal.

  • 3Then the elders of the city nearest to the corpse must take from the herd a heifer that has not been worked– that has never pulled with the yoke–

  • 11Now there was an old prophet living in Bethel. When his sons came home, they told him everything the prophet had done in Bethel that day. And they told their father all the words that he had spoken to the king.

  • 11Then the priests and the prophets made their charges before the officials and all the people. They said,“This man should be condemned to die because he prophesied against this city. You have heard him do so with your own ears.”
