7His armor bearer said to him,“Do everything that is on your mind. Do as you’re inclined. I’m with you all the way!”
8Jonathan replied,“All right! We’ll go over to these men and fight them.
5I and all the troops who are with me will approach the city. When they come out to fight us like before, we will retreat from them.
6They will attack us until we have lured them from the city, for they will say,‘They are retreating from us like before.’ We will retreat from them.
1Then one day Jonathan son of Saul said to his armor bearer,“Come on, let’s go over to the Philistine garrison that is opposite us.” But he did not let his father know.
13“You must not disobey the LORD your God by saying,‘We will not stay in this land.’
14You must not say,‘No, we will not stay. Instead we will go and live in the land of Egypt where we will not face war, or hear the enemy’s trumpet calls, or starve for lack of food.’
31Moses said,“Do not leave us, because you know places for us to camp in the wilderness, and you could be our guide.
32And if you come with us, it is certain that whatever good things the LORD will favor us with, we will share with you as well.”
17So Saul said to the army that was with him,“Muster the troops and see who is no longer with us.” When they mustered the troops, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.
9They said,“Come on, let’s attack them, for we saw their land and it is very good. You seem lethargic, but don’t hesitate to invade and conquer the land.
4If we go into the city, we’ll die of starvation, and if we stay here we’ll die! So come on, let’s defect to the Syrian camp! If they spare us, we’ll live; if they kill us– well, we were going to die anyway.”
3I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are. I will speak about you to my father. When I find out what the problem is, I will let you know.”
3But the soldiers replied,“You should not do this! For if we should have to make a rapid retreat, they won’t be too concerned about us. Even if half of us should die, they won’t be too concerned about us. But you are like ten thousand of us! So it is better if you remain in the city for support.”
11Our leaders and all who live in our land told us,‘Take provisions for your journey and go meet them. Tell them,“We are willing to be your subjects. Make a treaty with us.”’
17but we will maintain ourselves in armed readiness and go before the Israelites until whenever we have brought them to their place. Our descendants will be living in fortified towns as a protection against the inhabitants of the land.
18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has his inheritance.
42But the LORD told me:“Tell them this:‘Do not go up and fight, because I will not be with you and you will be defeated by your enemies.’”
9Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection has turned aside from them, but the LORD is with us. Do not fear them!”
14The men said to her,“If you die, may we die too! If you do not report what we’ve been up to, then, when the LORD hands the land over to us, we will show unswerving allegiance to you.”
10But if you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with Purah your servant
40Then he said to all Israel,“You will be on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will be on the other side.” The army replied to Saul,“Do whatever you think is best.”
16They told Joshua,“We will do everything you say. We will go wherever you send us.
31But the men who had gone up with him said,“We are not able to go up against these people, because they are stronger than we are!”
28Look, I will be waiting at the fords of the desert until word from you reaches me.”
3But David’s men said to him,“We are afraid while we are still here in Judah! What will it be like if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”
8So Moses said to them,“Remain here and I will hear what the LORD will command concerning you.”
11Jonathan said to David,“Come on. Let’s go out to the field.”When the two of them had gone out into the field,
9If he is able to fight with me and strike me down, we will become your servants. But if I prevail against him and strike him down, you will become our servants and will serve us.”
9But keep an eye on it. If it should go up by the way of its own border to Beth Shemesh, then he has brought this great calamity on us. But if that is not the case, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us; rather, it just happened to us by accident.”
44But they dared to go up to the crest of the hill, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed from the camp.
12They said to him,“We have come down to take you prisoner so we can hand you over to the Philistines.” Samson said to them,“Promise me you will not kill me.”
8All Israel rose up in unison and said,“Not one of us will go home! Not one of us will return to his house!
13Be strong! Let’s fight bravely for the sake of our people and the cities of our God! The LORD will do what he decides is best!”
42Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you, and you will be defeated before your enemies.
12We will come against him wherever he happens to be found. We will descend on him like the dew falls on the ground. Neither he nor any of the men who are with him will be spared alive– not one of them!
6We will obey what the LORD our God to whom we are sending you tells us to do. It does not matter whether we like what he tells us or not. We will obey what he tells us to do so that things will go well for us.”
21The Hebrews who had earlier gone over to the Philistine side joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
15And Moses said to him,“If your presence does not go with us, do not take us up from here.
9Then they said to one another,“It’s not right what we’re doing! This is a day to celebrate, but we haven’t told anyone. If we wait until dawn, we’ll be punished. So come on, let’s go and inform the royal palace.”
20Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, gather there with us. Our God will fight for us!”
