14The Covenant Curses“The Levites will call out to every Israelite with a loud voice:
8You must not make for yourself an image of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath.
4“You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below.
1Exhortation to Obedience“‘You must not make for yourselves idols, so you must not set up for yourselves a carved image or a pillar, and you must not place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down before it, for I am the LORD your God.
16I say this so you will not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the form of any kind of figure. This includes the likeness of a human male or female,
9All who form idols are nothing; the things in which they delight are worthless. Their witnesses cannot see; they recognize nothing, so they are put to shame.
10Who forms a god and casts an idol that will prove worthless?
3Tell them that the LORD, the God of Israel, says,‘Anyone who does not keep the terms of the covenant will be under a curse.
13I will remove your idols and sacred pillars from your midst; you will no longer worship what your own hands made.
25You must burn the images of their gods, but do not covet the silver and gold that covers them so much that you take it for yourself and thus become ensnared by it; for it is abhorrent to the LORD your God.
26You must not bring any abhorrent thing into your house and thereby become an object of divine wrath along with it. You must absolutely detest and abhor it, for it is an object of divine wrath.
25Threat and Blessing following Covenant Disobedience After you have produced children and grandchildren and have been in the land a long time, if you become corrupt and make an image of any kind and do other evil things before the LORD your God that enrage him,
23Be on guard so that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he has made with you, and that you do not make an image of any kind, just as he has forbidden you.
8They will no longer trust in the altars their hands made, or depend on the Asherah poles and incense altars their fingers made.
15The nations’ idols are made of silver and gold, they are man-made.
18What good is an idol? Why would a craftsman make it? What good is a metal image that gives misleading oracles? Why would its creator place his trust in it and make such mute, worthless things?
22You must not erect a sacred pillar, a thing the LORD your God detests.
14“Bring the one who cursed outside the camp, and all who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the whole congregation is to stone him to death.
15Moreover, you are to tell the Israelites,‘If any man curses his God he will bear responsibility for his sin,
7All who worship idols are ashamed, those who boast about worthless idols. All the gods bow down before him.
22You will desecrate your silver-plated idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away as if they were a menstrual rag, saying to them,“Get out!”
19A craftsman casts an idol; a metalsmith overlays it with gold and forges silver chains for it.
18Those who make them will end up like them, as will everyone who trusts in them.
17You must not make yourselves molten gods.
15The one caught with the riches must be burned up along with all who belong to him, because he violated the LORD’s covenant and did such a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”
28There you will worship gods made by human hands– wood and stone that can neither see, hear, eat, nor smell.
17All idolaters will prove to be stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith will be disgraced by the idol he made. For the image he forges is merely a sham. There is no breath in any of those idols.
7For at that time everyone will get rid of the silver and gold idols your hands sinfully made.
5Individuals Are Challenged to Put Their Trust in the Lord The LORD says,“I will put a curse on people who trust in mere human beings, who depend on mere flesh and blood for their strength, and whose hearts have turned away from the LORD.
17With the rest of it he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships it. He prays to it, saying,‘Rescue me, for you are my god!’
8Those who make them will end up like them, as will everyone who trusts in them.
14All these idolaters will prove to be stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith will be disgraced by the idol he made. For the image he forges is merely a sham. There is no breath in any of those idols.
16For anyone who acts dishonestly in these ways is abhorrent to the LORD your God.
17You have seen their detestable things and idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold.)
3The speaker went on to say,“This is a curse traveling across the whole earth. For example, according to the curse whoever steals will be removed from the community; or on the other hand(according to the curse) whoever swears falsely will suffer the same fate.”
