Theological Justification of the Conquest Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan so you can dispossess the nations there, people greater and stronger than you who live in large cities with extremely high fortifications.

  • 1When all the Amorite kings on the west side of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the seacoast heard how the LORD had dried up the water of the Jordan before the Israelites while they crossed, they lost their courage and could not even breathe for fear of the Israelites.

  • 18I declare to you this very day that you will certainly perish! You will not extend your time in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

  • 22So I must die here in this land; I will not cross the Jordan. But you are going over and will possess that good land.

  • 1The Lord Speaks to Joshua When Joshua was very old, the LORD told him,“You are very old, and a great deal of land remains to be conquered.

  • 32We will cross armed in the LORD’s presence into the land of Canaan, and then the possession of our inheritance that we inherit will be ours on this side of the Jordan River.”

  • 1The Lord’s Provision in the Desert You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors.

  • 31The LORD said to me,“Look! I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you. Start right now to take his land as your possession.”

  • 10For we heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you left Egypt and how you annihilated the two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og, on the other side of the Jordan.
