14But as for you, Jeremiah, do not pray for these people. Do not raise a cry of prayer for them. For I will not listen to them when they call out to me for help when disaster strikes them.”
16“But as for you, Jeremiah, do not pray for these people! Do not raise a cry of prayer for them! Do not plead with me to save them, because I will not listen to you.
17Do you see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
12Even if they fast, I will not hear their cries for help. Even if they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will kill them through wars, famines, and plagues.”
13Then I said,“Oh, Sovereign LORD, look! The prophets are telling them that you said,‘You will not experience war or suffer famine. I will give you lasting peace and prosperity in this land.’”
14Then the LORD said to me,“Those prophets are prophesying lies while claiming my authority! I did not send them. I did not commission them. I did not speak to them. They are prophesying to these people false visions, worthless predictions, and the delusions of their own mind.
10Then the LORD spoke about these people.“They truly love to go astray. They cannot keep from running away from me. So I am not pleased with them. I will now call to mind the wrongs they have done and punish them for their sins.”
10They have gone back to the evil ways of their ancestors of old who refused to obey what I told them. They, too, have paid allegiance to other gods and worshiped them. Both the nation of Israel and the nation of Judah have violated the covenant I made with their ancestors.
11So I, the LORD, say this:‘I will soon bring disaster on them which they will not be able to escape! When they cry out to me for help, I will not listen to them.
12Then those living in the towns of Judah and in Jerusalem will go and cry out for help to the gods to whom they have been sacrificing. However, those gods will by no means be able to save them when disaster strikes them.
1Then the LORD said to me,“Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me pleading for these people, I would not feel pity for them! Get them away from me! Tell them to go away!
3The LORD decided not to do this.“It will not happen,” the LORD said.
6The LORD decided not to do this. The Sovereign LORD said,“This will not happen either.”
4Someday these sinful leaders will cry to the LORD for help, but he will not answer them. He will hide his face from them at that time, because they have done such wicked deeds.”
10But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it.
11So now, tell the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem this: The LORD says,‘I am preparing to bring disaster on you! I am making plans to punish you. So, every one of you, stop the evil things you have been doing. Correct the way you have been living and do what is right.’
11But my people did not obey me; Israel did not submit to me.
19Hear this, you peoples of the earth:‘Take note! I am about to bring disaster on these people. It will come as punishment for their scheming. For they have paid no attention to what I have said, and they have rejected my law.
5“Moreover I, the LORD, tell you:‘Do not go into a house where they are having a funeral meal. Do not go there to mourn and express your sorrow for them. For I have stopped showing them my good favor, my love, and my compassion. I, the LORD, so affirm it!
6Indeed, I will no longer have compassion on the people of the land,” says the LORD,“but instead I will turn every last person over to his neighbor and his king. They will devastate the land, and I will not deliver it from them.”
11The Lord Encourages Isaiah Indeed this is what the LORD told me quite forcefully. He warned me not to act like these people:
13The people did not return to the one who struck them, they did not seek reconciliation with the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
14Then the LORD’s message came to me:
11so that the house of Israel will no longer go astray from me, nor continue to defile themselves by all their sins. They will be my people and I will be their God, declares the Sovereign LORD.’”
12The LORD’s message came to me:
16The people to whom they are prophesying will die through war and famine. Their bodies will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem and there will be no one to bury them. This will happen to the men and their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out on them the destruction they deserve.”
17So I, the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, say:“I will soon bring on Judah and all the citizens of Jerusalem all the disaster that I threatened to bring on them. I will do this because I spoke to them but they did not listen. I called out to them but they did not answer.”’”
10The LORD commanded the enemy,“March through the vineyards of Israel and Judah and ruin them. But do not destroy them completely. Strip off their branches for these people do not belong to the LORD.
11For the nations of Israel and Judah have been very unfaithful to me,”says the LORD.
10The Lord Promises Exile(But Also Restoration)“When you tell these people about all this, they will undoubtedly ask you,‘Why has the LORD threatened us with such great disaster? What wrong have we done? What sin have we done to offend the LORD our God?’
9I will certainly punish them for doing such things!” says the LORD.“I will certainly bring retribution on such a nation as this!”
10These wicked people refuse to obey what I have said. They follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts and pay allegiance to other gods by worshiping and serving them. So they will become just like these linen shorts which are good for nothing.
11For,’ I say,‘just as shorts cling tightly to a person’s body, so I bound the whole nation of Israel and the whole nation of Judah tightly to me.’ I intended for them to be my special people and to bring me fame, honor, and praise. But they would not obey me.
15Then I said to the people of Judah,“Listen and pay attention! Do not be arrogant! For the LORD has spoken.
13The LORD answered,“This has happened because these people have rejected my laws which I gave them. They have not obeyed me or followed those laws.
14Then the LORD said,“From the north destruction will break out on all who live in the land.
2The LORD’s message came to me:
4“Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets called out, saying,‘This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has said,“Turn now from your evil wickedness,”’ but they would by no means obey me,” says the LORD.
17But I will completely uproot and destroy any of those nations that will not pay heed,’” says the LORD.
6I, the LORD, say:‘You people have deserted me! You keep turning your back on me.’ So I have unleashed my power against you and have begun to destroy you. I have grown tired of feeling sorry for you!”
17So the Lord was not pleased with their young men, he took no pity on their orphans and widows; for the whole nation was godless and did wicked things, every mouth was speaking disgraceful words. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again.
11Then LORD’s message came to me:
9Then Jeremiah said to them,“You sent me to the LORD God of Israel to make your request known to him. Here is what he says to you:
13“‘It then came about that just as I cried out, but they would not obey, so they will cry out, but I will not listen,’ the LORD of Heaven’s Armies had said.
9But now plead for God’s favor that he might be gracious to us.“With this kind of offering in your hands, how can he be pleased with you?” asks the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
11Warnings to the Royal Court The LORD told me to say to the royal court of Judah,“Listen to the LORD’s message,
11But I will be different now to this remnant of my people from the way I was in those days,’ says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies,
5But the people of Jerusalem and Judah would not listen or pay any attention. They would not stop the wickedness they were doing nor quit sacrificing to other gods.
14The LORD was mindful of the calamity, and he brought it on us. For the LORD our God is just in all he has done, and we have not obeyed him.
19Then I said,“LORD, have you completely rejected the nation of Judah? Do you despise the city of Zion? Why have you struck us with such force that we are beyond recovery? We hope for peace, but nothing good has come of it. We hope for a time of relief from our troubles, but experience terror.
