Work to see that the city where I sent you as exiles enjoys peace and prosperity. Pray to the LORD for it. For as it prospers you will prosper.’

  • 1Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalem to Babylon. It was addressed to the elders who were left among the exiles, to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the other people who were exiled in Babylon.

  • 15so that he may initiate a search of the records of his predecessors and discover in those records that this city is rebellious and injurious to both kings and provinces, producing internal revolts from long ago. It is for this very reason that this city was destroyed.

  • 19But your wives, children, and livestock(of which I know you have many) may remain in the cities I have given you.

  • 8“For the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel says,‘Do not let the prophets among you or those who claim to be able to predict the future by divination deceive you. And do not pay any attention to the dreams that you are encouraging them to dream.

  • 18The Lord Will Restore Israel and Judah The LORD says,“I will restore the ruined houses of the descendants of Jacob. I will show compassion on their ruined homes. Every city will be rebuilt on its former ruins. Every fortified dwelling will occupy its traditional site.

  • 15so, to the contrary, I have planned in these days to do good to Jerusalem and Judah– do not fear!

  • 15and to bring silver and gold which the king and his advisers have freely contributed to the God of Israel, who resides in Jerusalem,

  • 17The king sent the following response:“To Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues who live in Samaria and other parts of Trans-Euphrates: Greetings!

  • 9Then Jeremiah said to them,“You sent me to the LORD God of Israel to make your request known to him. Here is what he says to you:

  • 14Turn away from evil and do what is right! Strive for peace and promote it!

  • 7The Instruction of the People“Moreover, this is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has said:‘Pay close attention to these things also.

  • 11Now listen to me! Send back those you have seized from your brothers, for the LORD is very angry at you!”

  • 6But I will most surely heal the wounds of this city and restore it and its people to health. I will show them abundant peace and security.

  • 7But listen to what I say to you and to all these people.

  • 10In response to all this I said,“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have surely allowed the people of Judah and Jerusalem to be deceived by those who say,‘You will be safe!’ But in fact a sword is already at our throats.”

  • 17Do you see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

  • 22Many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the LORD of Heaven’s Armies and to ask his favor.

  • 12I will have compassion on you so that he in turn will have mercy on you and allow you to return to your land.’

  • 4that the LORD, the God of Israel, says,‘The forces at your disposal are now outside the walls fighting against King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonians who have you under siege. I will gather those forces back inside the city.

  • 22For I, the LORD, affirm that I will soon give the order and bring them back to this city. They will fight against it and capture it and burn it down. I will also make the towns of Judah desolate so that there will be no one living in them.”’”
