1The Petition of the Reubenites and Gadites Now the Reubenites and the Gadites possessed a very large number of cattle. When they saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were ideal for cattle,
2the Gadites and the Reubenites came and addressed Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community. They said,
8saying,“Take home great wealth, a lot of cattle, silver, gold, bronze, iron, and a lot of clothing. Divide up the goods captured from your enemies with your brothers.”
9So the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites in Shiloh in the land of Canaan and headed home to their own land in Gilead, which they acquired by the LORD’s command through Moses.
33The Israelites were satisfied with their report and gave thanks to God. They said nothing more about launching an attack to destroy the land in which the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
21The Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered the leaders of the Israelite clans:
28Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was serving the LORD in those days),“Should we once more march out to fight the Benjaminites our brothers, or should we quit?” The LORD said,“Attack, for tomorrow I will hand them over to you.”
25They returned from investigating the land after forty days.
26The Spies’ Reports They came back to Moses and Aaron and to the whole community of the Israelites in the wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They reported to the whole community and showed the fruit of the land.
12They brought the captives and the spoils and the plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the Israelite community, to the camp on the rift valley plains of Moab, along the Jordan River across from Jericho.
13Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went out to meet them outside the camp.
28So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the families of the Israelite tribes.
29Moses said to them:“If the Gadites and the Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, each one equipped for battle in the LORD’s presence, and you conquer the land, then you must allot them the territory of Gilead as their possession.
30But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must receive possessions among you in Canaan.”
31Then the Gadites and the Reubenites answered,“Your servants will do what the LORD has spoken.
32We will cross armed in the LORD’s presence into the land of Canaan, and then the possession of our inheritance that we inherit will be ours on this side of the Jordan River.”
6Moses’ Response Moses said to the Gadites and the Reubenites,“Must your brothers go to war while you remain here?
7Why do you frustrate the intent of the Israelites to cross over into the land which the LORD has given them?
31But Moses called to them, so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and Moses spoke to them.
12The Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed for battle ahead of the Israelites, just as Moses had instructed them.
23Then the two men returned– they came down from the hills, crossed the river, came to Joshua son of Nun, and reported to him all they had discovered.
7When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he got up from among the assembly, took a javelin in his hand,
8and went after the Israelite man into the tent and thrust through the Israelite man and into the woman’s abdomen. So the plague was stopped from the Israelites.
1Joshua Sends Home the Eastern Tribes Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh
25So the Gadites and the Reubenites replied to Moses,“Your servants will do as my lord commands.
11“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites, when he manifested such zeal for my sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in my zeal.

16Look, these people through the counsel of Balaam caused the Israelites to act treacherously against the LORD in the matter of Peor– which resulted in the plague among the community of the LORD!

5And he sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates River in the land of Amaw, to summon him, saying,“Look, a nation has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth, and they are settling next to me.
22So all of you approached me and said,“Let’s send some men ahead of us to scout out the land and bring us back word as to how we should attack it and what the cities are like there.”
25Then they took some of the produce of the land and carried it back down to us. They also brought a report to us, saying,“The land that the LORD our God is about to give us is good.”
18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has his inheritance.
15Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.
30Phinehas took a stand and intervened, and the plague subsided.
