1 Spies Sent Out The LORD spoke to Moses:
2 “Send out men to investigate the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You are to send one man from each ancestral tribe, each one a leader among them.”
21 Look, he has placed the land in front of you! Go up, take possession of it, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, said to do. Do not be afraid or discouraged!”
22 So all of you approached me and said,“Let’s send some men ahead of us to scout out the land and bring us back word as to how we should attack it and what the cities are like there.”
23 I thought this was a good idea, so I sent twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.
24 They left and went up to the hill country, coming to the Eshcol Valley, which they scouted out.
25 Then they took some of the produce of the land and carried it back down to us. They also brought a report to us, saying,“The land that the LORD our God is about to give us is good.”
31 But the men who had gone up with him said,“We are not able to go up against these people, because they are stronger than we are!”
32 Then they presented the Israelites with a discouraging report of the land they had investigated, saying,“The land that we passed through to investigate is a land that devours its inhabitants. All the people we saw there are of great stature.
33 We even saw the Nephilim there(the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we seemed like grasshoppers both to ourselves and to them.”
9 They said,“Come on, let’s attack them, for we saw their land and it is very good. You seem lethargic, but don’t hesitate to invade and conquer the land.
10 When you invade, you will encounter unsuspecting people. The land is wide! God is handing it over to you– a place that lacks nothing on earth!”
7 They said to the whole community of the Israelites,“The land we passed through to investigate is an exceedingly good land.
8 If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us– a land that is flowing with milk and honey.
9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection has turned aside from them, but the LORD is with us. Do not fear them!”
28 What is going to happen to us? Our brothers have drained away our courage by describing people who are more numerous and taller than we are, and great cities whose defenses appear to be as high as heaven itself! Moreover, they said they saw Anakites there.”

9 When they went up to the Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they frustrated the intent of the Israelites so that they did not enter the land that the LORD had given them.
