  • Judg 14:1-9 : 1 And Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 And he came up and told his father and mother, saying, I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. Now therefore, get her for me as a wife. 3 Then his father and mother said to him, Is there not a woman among the daughters of your brothers or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said to his father, Get her for me, for she pleases me well. 4 But his father and mother did not know that it was from the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines, for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel. 5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came roaring against him. 6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore him as he would have torn a young goat, and he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. 7 And he went down and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well. 8 And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of the lion. 9 And he took some in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them some, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion. 10 So his father went down to the woman, and Samson made there a feast, for so the young men used to do. 11 And it happened, when they saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 And Samson said to them, I will now put forth a riddle to you. If you can certainly declare it to me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty changes of garments. 13 But if you cannot declare it to me, then you shall give me thirty sheets and thirty changes of garments. And they said to him, Put forth your riddle, so we may hear it. 14 And he said to them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days explain the riddle. 15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said to Samson's wife, Entice your husband to tell us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you called us to impoverish us? Is it not so? 16 And Samson's wife wept before him and said, You only hate me, and love me not. You have put forth a riddle to the children of my people, and have not told it to me. And he said to her, Behold, I have not told it to my father or my mother, and shall I tell you?
  • 1 Sam 4:1-6 : 1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and camped beside Ebenezer, and the Philistines camped in Aphek. 2 And the Philistines arranged themselves against Israel, and when they joined battle, Israel was defeated before the Philistines, and they killed about four thousand men of the army in the field. 3 And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us, it may save us from the hand of our enemies. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who dwells between the cherubim, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout so that the earth rang again. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean? And they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.
  • 1 Sam 13:1-9 : 1 Saul reigned for one year; and when he had reigned for two years over Israel, 2 Saul chose three thousand men of Israel; two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent every man to his tent. 3 And Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. 4 And all Israel heard that Saul had struck a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel was in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together to Saul at Gilgal. 5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as numerous as the sand on the seashore; and they came up and encamped in Michmash, east of Bethaven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. 7 And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 8 And he waited seven days, according to the time that Samuel had appointed; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattered from him. 9 And Saul said, Bring here a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10 And it came to pass, as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him. 11 And Samuel said, What have you done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the appointed days, and that the Philistines gathered at Michmash, 12 Therefore I said, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the LORD; I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. 13 And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you: for now the LORD would have established your kingdom upon Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue: the LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him to be captain over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.
  • 1 Sam 17:1-9 : 1 Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle, and assembled at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and camped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. 2 And Saul and the men of Israel gathered and camped by the Valley of Elah, setting the battle in array against the Philistines. 3 The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. 4 A champion came out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and was armed with a coat of mail, and the coat weighed five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 He wore bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. 7 The staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron, and a shield-bearer went before him. 8 He stood and cried to the armies of Israel and said to them, Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. 11 When Saul and all Israel heard the words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid. 12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years. 13 The three eldest sons of Jesse followed Saul to the battle, and the names of his three sons who went were Eliab the firstborn, next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 David was the youngest; the three eldest followed Saul. 15 But David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 16 The Philistine drew near morning and evening and presented himself for forty days. 17 Jesse said to David his son, Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers. 18 Carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand and see how your brothers fare and take their pledge. 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. 20 David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went as Jesse had commanded him; he came to the camp as the army was going out to the fight and shouting for battle. 21 Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army. 22 David left his baggage in the care of the baggage keeper, ran to the army, and greeted his brothers. 23 As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath named Goliath came from the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before, and David heard them. 24 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were very afraid. 25 The men of Israel said, Have you seen this man that has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. The king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches, will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel. 26 David spoke to the men standing by him, asking, What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27 The people answered him in this manner, saying, So shall it be done for the man who kills him. 28 Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men and Eliab's anger burned against David. He said, Why have you come down here? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the wickedness of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle. 29 David said, What have I done now? Is there not a cause? 30 He turned from him to another and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before. 31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him. 32 David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 Saul said to David, You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are just a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth. 34 David said to Saul, Your servant kept his father's sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. When it rose against me, I caught it by its beard, struck it, and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 David said moreover, The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. Saul said to David, Go, and the LORD be with you. 38 Saul clothed David with his armor, put a bronze helmet on his head, and clothed him with a coat of mail. 39 David fastened his sword over his armor and tried to go, but he was not used to them. David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I am not used to them. And David took them off. 40 He took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the brook, put them in the shepherd's bag, in the pouch he had, and with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. 41 The Philistine came closer and closer to David, and the man who carried his shield went in front of him. 42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was just a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 43 The Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the field. 45 Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. I will give the bodies of the Philistine army this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands. 48 When the Philistine arose and came near to meet David, David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 David put his hand in his bag, took a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine in the forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone and struck the Philistine, and killed him. There was no sword in David's hand. 51 David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52 The men of Israel and Judah arose, shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance to the valley and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell along the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron. 53 The Israelites returned from chasing after the Philistines and plundered their camp. 54 David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put the Philistine's armor in his tent. 55 When Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, Abner, whose son is this youth? Abner said, As your soul lives, O king, I do not know. 56 The king said, Inquire whose son the young man is. 57 When David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 Saul said to him, Whose son are you, young man? David answered, I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
  • 1 Sam 21:1-9 : 1 Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David and said to him, Why are you alone, and no man with you? 2 And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me a matter, and has said to me, Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place. 3 Now therefore, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever there is present. 4 And the priest answered David and said, There is no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread, if the young men have kept themselves at least from women. 5 And David answered the priest and said to him, Truly, women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yes, though it was sanctified this day in the vessel. 6 So the priest gave him holy bread, for there was no bread there but the showbread, which was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day it was taken away. 7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chief of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul. 8 And David said to Ahimelech, Is there not here on hand a spear or sword? For I have not brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste. 9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if you will take that, take it, for there is no other but that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it to me. 10 And David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said to him, Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, saying, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? 12 And David took these words to heart and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 And he changed his behavior before them, and pretended to be mad in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, Look, you see the man is mad: why have you brought him to me? 15 Do I need mad men, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?
  • 2 Sam 8:1-9 : 1 And after this, it came to pass that David defeated the Philistines and subdued them; and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines. 2 And he defeated Moab and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; with two lines he measured to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David's servants and brought gifts. 3 David also defeated Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his territory at the river Euphrates. 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers; and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved enough for a hundred chariots. 5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to aid Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men of the Syrians. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus, and the Syrians became David's servants and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went. 7 And David took the golden shields that were on the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took a great amount of bronze. 9 When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10 Then Toi sent Joram his son to king David, to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, articles of gold, and articles of bronze. 11 These king David also dedicated to the LORD, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued: 12 From Syria, Moab, the children of Ammon, the Philistines, Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah. 13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down eighteen thousand men of the Syrians in the Valley of Salt. 14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went. 15 And David reigned over all Israel, and David executed judgment and justice for all his people. 16 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; 17 And Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe; 18 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief officials.

And if you repay me, swiftly and speedily I will return your recompense upon your own head; 5 Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my precious pleasant things. 6 The children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem you have sold to the Greeks, that you might remove them far from their border. 7 Behold, I will raise them out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your recompense upon your own head: 8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off, for the LORD has spoken it. 9 Proclaim this among the nations: Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: 10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, I am strong. 11 Assemble yourselves and come, all you nations, and gather yourselves together round about; cause your mighty ones to come down there, O LORD. 12 Let the nations be stirred up, and come to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. 13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come, get down, for the press is full, the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great. 14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision, for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. 16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake. But the LORD will be the hope of his people and the strength of the children of Israel. 17 So shall you know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. Then shall Jerusalem be holy, and strangers shall no longer pass through her. 18 And it shall come to pass in that day that the mountains shall drip with new wine, the hills shall flow with milk, and all the brooks of Judah shall flow with water, and a fountain shall come forth from the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim. 19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land. 20 But Judah shall abide forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. 21 For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed, for the LORD dwells in Zion.
  • Amos 1:6-8 : 6 Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom: 7 But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour its palaces: 8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon, and I will turn My hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, says the Lord GOD.
  • Zeph 2:4-7 : 4 For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at noonday, and Ekron shall be uprooted. 5 Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast, the nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will destroy you, so there shall be no inhabitant. 6 And the seacoast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks. 7 And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed there: in the houses of Ashkelon they shall lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.
  • Zech 9:5-8 : 5 Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron, for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited. 6 A mixed race shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. 7 I will take away his blood from his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth: but he who remains, even he, shall be for our God, and he shall be like a governor in Judah, and Ekron like a Jebusite. 8 I will encamp around my house because of the army, because of him who passes by, and because of him who returns: and no oppressor shall pass through them anymore, for now I have seen with my eyes.
